This thead is weak. 600 wheel hooks in second for me on stock gearing with 305/35/18 Nitto DRs (only in summer) and those are the worst DRs you can buy. I say 800 wheel with the correct tire.

Conventional wisdom is that 500-600 rwhp on a 2wd car (rear-wheel drive, that is) is at about the limit for the average driver and using 'street' technology. Formula One cars 'make do' with 800 hp or more (and cutting edge suspension, tires and super-human drivers).
The same conventional wisdom says that 4wd can let the average driver deal with over 1,000 hp (i.e. Bugatti Veyron) with enough traction control aids.
Usable power is a very slippery subject and is dependent on what you want to use the car for, how you have the suspension set-up and what compromises you are willing to make.
Your best bet is to install a system that let's you begin conservatively and reliably (a flexible and adjustable twin turbo kit ought to do it) and add improvements as your needs and skills increase until you reach the point when the compromises outweigh the fun.
It only takes money.

I think around the 400whp mark is enough for an everyday street fun driven car, I havent had too much experiance with high hp cars, but I did go for a spin in a 600hp supra and the first 3 gears were basically useless.
over powered for the streets if you ask me, and hwy runs are just LAME !!

Why not have the best of both worlds - 450hp at lower speeds, 550 midrange, and 650 interstate?
I just finished testing wheel-speed based boost control in Haltech and it works quite well. You can run as low as wastegate for lower speeds/gears, and then ramp in as much boost as you want for higher speeds. This will be another free update, slated for next week.
