+10000 Julian doesn't hide stuff like this...

My guess is the failure was a combination of things...
Good luck with the rebuild!

Just curious what EMS you were using to control the launch...not that it matters really...was that the VPro? (Like I said just curious.) 2 steppin' again Julian.

We were running the HKS FCON V-PRO. But the EMS has nothing to do with what happened..More like the launch at 6500 off the launch control, which causes less than favorable conditions to take place within your engine. but allows the turbos to spool up at the starting line. Were guessing the harmonics and vibration along with the high RPM's caused the stock oil pump and crank to fail.
What "seems like a good idea at the time" isnt always the best idea in retrospect.

Have you narrowed down an EMS for your project Randy?

Still being worked on. Nothing final as of yet. I have a bit of time since I will be breaking in the new motor these next couple of weeks. But once I build it I won't be able to drive the car without a new set of brains... Sorry for the O.T.

P.S. I opted for the Fluidamper for my build just to minimize any risks.

@ 'adaptive learning'...sometimes that's just how you gotta do it.

Interesting that it cracked the crank, though.

I remember one thread I've seen on the forums I come from, where a revup oil pump was broken into 4 seperate pieces:
http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=543644
http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=395667

I don't believe he had the crank checked out, but there was apparently no obvious damage done. Hope he doesn't mind me posting the pics :wall:.

So you're still thinking it was the impact in the donor car that took it down, or any possibility it was the launch control?

In any case, congrats on actually checking it out to be sure, I've seen many a shop that would just install a new oil pump, throw a few gaskets at the motor and call it a day. Of course, those shops weren't MRC

Yeah this is what the oil pump looked like on ours, so i would have had those cranks checked on those set ups.

After the carnage that took place in that motor, one would be nuts to reinstall the crank without checking it out fully.

The first one was just pushing the stock block VQ30 & oil pump to see how far it would go, and didn't care if it went... and it seized bearings so no point on checking the crank. It was dirt cheap to toss that engine away and throw another one in when you're talking a VQ30...

The second engine was to try the revup pump because it was first thought the VQ30 pump was the problem... but still stock block, no work done to it (it's just a stop gap while the 3.5 is being built)... and that 3L engine is just sitting in the car over the winter, hasn't been pulled out/torn down yet.

I'd like to know exactly what caused Julian's failure though, if indeed the launch control is a factor that's disconcerting, because a lot of us that drag race like using it...

WE just picked up the old broken Crank from Weston Machine, and he said the cracks were actauly near 3 of the Rod journals, not the mains. He said it could be from simply making too much power on the crank over and over again. And it also could be from detonation or crank vibration. Now looking at the tops of our pistons, they are not pitted and show ZERO signs of classic detonation.

Which leads me to conclude, that the launch control killed our crank..The violent and irratic explosions inside the motor in an attemp tto spool up the turbos while standing still, caused the crank to vibrate and flex, crackig the oil pump and the crank..This is my offical diagnosis.

Discuss..

PS I wil ost pictures tommorow, I dont have time today to do so.

I don't think a new crank is needed, but a BETTER (balanced) stock crank. OEM is balance just enough to get threw 100,000 mileish.
