Default APS Intercooler + Stock Bumper = Bad

Hey guys, well I survived my first lapping day.. well it was more of a high performance driving school / lapping day. I did notice that after about 5-10 minutes of hard boosting I started getting some detonation. I am thinking this is due to the intercooler being 70% or so blocked by the bumper so it is creating heat soak, causing higher temp intake air which means more likely to knock? Correct me if im wrong.

What do you guys think? If it is, looks like ill be getting a karumaZ bumper faster then anticipated.

check out the picture, you get the idea.. sorry I dont have a more direct shot:

and yes that is indeed my sexy self on the right of the pic

Yeah it's blocking more than 70% airflow.. which is bad. Kuruma bumper looks funky IMO. Top Secret is where it's at. Check it out..

I would deffinetly consider removing your bumper if you are planing on running your car hard. Heat is your enemy, especially if you F/I. A better suited bumper (Like Foreign's Top Secret), will aid you in keeping your temperatures down.

How often do you plan on hitting the track?

as much as possible... so im looking for a solution asap. Top secret bumper is nice but I think I like the way the karuma looks a bit better. Wonder what the difference is as far as air flow to the intercooler between those 2

Fiber is also very easy to fix plus as long as you are careful when driving then you should be ok. I live in NYC and my TopSecret still look great!!

OP, don't know if you like Kenstyle but this guy is selling an Authentic one for $700 and it is already primed so you just need to paint it. I've been burned by replica so only Authentic for me from now on.

do you guys think this would be a problem if it was just driven under normal driving conditions with a once in a while driving it hard? cuz i was planning on doing the single on my G and stick with the OEM bumper..

Any front mount setup is going to be bad with that bumper. You'd be better off switching to an aftermarket bumper or running side mounts.

What do you have on the car as far as engine management, and do you have any way to log air temps? That bumper is definitely not ideal for the intercooler situation. It doesn't sound like you are married to the stock bumper, but if you were... experiment with diffusers on the sides that direct all the airflow to the center through the intercooler and put plates over top and bottom to force the air through the IC.

Regarding knock after driving hard for a couple minutes, most decent managements have the ability to adjust fuel+timing based on air and coolant temps. Timing needs to be reduced for the warmer air temps, and if no adjustments were done it is probably running rich with the hotter air coming in as well.

if you don't want to change out your bumper, you could always hook up a methanol or nitrous setup to just spray the intercooler when temps get to a certain point. Methanol is probably the most cost effective route...good luck.

...also, you can run higher octane fuel (104 or above)...that'll cool everything down inside.

That's the best suggestion right there. 100 octane minimum for track day FI...that's our rule.

I think everyones response hit on what I was going to say already.

If you are wanting to keep the stock bumper, you have 2 options for better airflow. First, is what Hal said; look into a diffuser to direct a greater airflow into the openings on the bumper. Second, you can always have a body shop add the "Quick Release" hardware to your bumper to where you can remove it easily at the track, and re-install your self with a few straps.

Another thing is also what Hal said... Whay EMS are you running? Are you running any other cooling mods? Radiator? Oil Cooler? Meth/Water Injection. One of those "N-Tercooler" kits might be something to look into.

And lastly... +1000000 on what Sharif said!!! Always run a higher octane on your vehicle if you plan on getting on it hard!!

It has nothing to do with the APS single kit... do you plan on running the same stock bumper as the OP?
