Default APS TT Smoking again

Hi Guys,

Needs some help. Whenever I do an oil change my car smokes like hell. I use the recommended Quartz/litres recommended by APS and it still smokes. After a few 100 miles it goes away as my oil level drops. I am using Mobil 1 Oil. My oil drain system is 100% we checked it like over 4 times.

Any ideas of what it could be. Does any one have the same issue and what should I do to prevent this?

Cheers

You can't just dump in 5 qts and call it good. You need to fill to the appropriate volumed measured on the dipstick. I usually fill mine about 1/8" over the low line. If you are blindly dumping in a set amount, you may be overfilling.

Can you say what the "low line" is? IS it the bottom of the hashes or the "L"?

I always use my dipstick level exactly in the "L" or lower , never over the L. If I do that ,I have smoke.

The oil level is def the 1st thing to check...but there are other possibilities as well.

Anytime your dealing with an external oil pump, your running a greater chance of having more issues.

Most popular APS TT smoking issues

1. Oil Level - repair time - .5 hr
2. Oil return lines not trimmed properly - repair time - 1.5 hr
3. Bad Turbo - repair time - 1 to 4 months

There are definitely other potential reasons, for example we just had an issue like this on the build we are doing on my buddy's G35. The return line was pinched. Took 10 minutes to resolve. In this case, definitely check the oil level.

APS single turbo has an external scavenge oil pump. APS twin turbo doesn't.

This problem was pointed out like 2 years ago.

The problem is the oil feed restrictor sized by APS for the kit. The excessive pressure on the turbo seals caused them to bend. Once the seals are bent, they leak oil under light loads and cold temps into the exhaust. To remedy the problem, swap in a larger restrictor. The dmg is done to the turbo seals, you will need to have them rebuilt.

Is this restrictor problem you mention on all APS kits (even recent ones), or just APS kits from a couple of years ago ?

Thats what happened to me...If you don't decide to do this, getting them rebuilt is why I tell everyone to avoid APS and go w/ a standard GT series turbo or the greddy twins. - when one goes bad, you need to have them both rebuilt because there are no direct swaps for this and both need to match.
