Jesse James was fined over a million dollars for selling custom motorcycles in california that didn't meet CARB standards. The problem is needing emissions testing, motorcycles don't require (yet) testing nor do diesel powered vehicles. That said it's still not legal for vehicles driven on the street.

 

The semi's have been cracked down on. The only diesel fuel in califronia is low sulfer, thats like you only getting 87 octane. Most interstate truckers fuel up before entering CA and will only get enough fuel to get out. As for the old beater cars lately you don't see as many, with 3.80 gallon fuel 9MPG cars don't see too much road time as daily drivers.

There are a lot of LEGAL turbo kits, just not for late model cars. For aftermarket performance parts to be legal the MFGR is required to demonstrate that the vehicle will meet emissions standards for the model year of the vehicle, as emission standards change pass fail standards change. There are several tests that they need to pass such as the warm up cycle of the cats, heat up time of o2 sensors and such, not just what is comming out the exhaust pipe.

 

You have Nevada plates, yer cool. You can even have dark tints on the front windows, because it's registered in another state they will not enforce california laws. Now if it was something that was obviously illegal in any state you can get stopped.

 

Which is why, when the USMC transfers me to California this year, I'm keeping my Colorado plates, and Colorado license, and Colorado residency!

 

like i said, if its about getting CARB certification i know nothing about that but if you take your car to get smogged there isnt a cold start test. unless your car sits for a while before the test, the car isnt in cold start mode for more than a minute. anyway, like i said, i passed all the tests fine on test pipes

 

This is slightly incorrect. Highway Patrol has the authority to perform vehicle searches under the guise of a vehicle safety inspection.

As far as I know, most municipal police departments need plausible cause to inspect a car.

 

Where were you pulled over and inspected and by which police authority? Also, what did they pull you over for initially?

We don't get in no trouble, that's gotta cost you a lot of money installing, uninstalling, installing uninstalling, that's a bunch of bull. CAn't you just register the car out of state and not have to go by their law in cali?

There are a number of vaild reasons to keep your car registered in another state. If you are just passing through on vacation, or if you are there for less than 90 days. Also, if you live on one side of the border and work on the other. And what applies to me, if you are tehere temporarily, such as for the military, you are allowed to keep your residency in another state, which includes keeping that other states drivers license, car registration, etc...

And, if your car is registered in another state, it has to abide by the rules of that state, NOT California.

 

I already know about the registration issues but I got the info on abding Cali law during a phone conversation with several police agencies and the Justice Department. I will have to triple check.
