Default Gentlemen/women of Boost, please come in.

Had an issue that I noticed on Sunday.

Just going to throw this out there, Friday night I noticed a burning/melting plastic/rubber smell on my way to a meet. When I pulled up to the meet a buddy noticed it too.

I never thought anything of it (forgot actually) and went on our way to moxies later on. Car ran perfect, no issues, didn't notice the smell later that night either.

Sunday, I come down to the office for some work. Car is being a ***** more than usual, I have stalling issues when coming from high revs to a stop, or high revs and clutching in (needs an Idle bump) but I can normally control it with blips of the throttle.

On my way home I noticed that in any gear, if I roll into the 4K RPM range the car began to hesitate, and go rich, and kinda bog down.

But if I would blow through the range at WOT, the car still pulled and made proper boost.

Vacuum seems good, at idle too, nothing out or the ordinary.

So I thought I melted or cracked a vacuum line however last night I couldn't see anything wrong with them (still need to roll under the car to check the lower lines to the W/G)

Maybe tuning? With the colder weather? I've installed a TB Spacer too (weeks ago) and never tuned after that but I really only noticed this on Sunday.

Also it's the AAM TB Spacer and Vacuum tree. I installed it a few weeks ago, didn't have any issues since. Yes it came with a new gasket and it was used.

It could be a crack or something for all I know, car Idles fine, vacuum looks good on Idle, WOT is fine, it's only in that mid range where it acts funny, maybe the crack/hole opens up I don't know.

Thoughts?

What EMS are you using?
Which turbo or supercharger setup are you using?
If it is a utec sometimes they will run real rich when changing into the 10% column it has happened to me a few times when I was procharged. Found out later it was the tune. No problems with it now.

I see no reason for you to seem so clueless when you were smelling burning and haven't even checked your whole car???? AND you go into boost?LOL

Yeah Sorry.

Greddy TT, with UTEC. It seems like it's that transitional phase from ECU to UTEC, so maybe tune.

Fluid, I'll be checking the rest tonight, after that smell, it never came back and I forgot about it honestly.

Sounds stupid I guess. Car isn't struggling or anything, guages look normal.

if everything is reading fine, and all the lines are there, check and make sure your not dripping fluid or anything onto the turbos.

After work I put the car up and checked everything I could see and get my hands on, all vacuum lines seem OK, nothing appears to be melted or cracked (that I can see).

We did a pressure test at a friends, found that my BOV seems to have a small leak at the top where the valve adjustment is made but wouldn't really be causing this issue.

Then things went from stupid to really stupid.

We did some logging at tuning, we found that the car was running rich obvioviously under boost. So we removed some fuel, did some more logging, removed more fuel. Then we started having an issue where even when the UTEC wasn't controlling the car, the car would just DUMP fuel.

We saved the logs (RPM doesn't work), so you can see below, I get up to about 4.6 PSI, the car physcally hesitates and I let off the gas then the car just starts dumping fuel, the car continues to dump fuel nearly flooding it till stalling. My car was smoking SOO much it was litterally like a John force burn out covering the WHOLE road with a plume of white smoke.

Eventually if I let the car idle it will come back to normal, after the 9.60AFR it starts to lean out again...

Something is causing the car to dump fuel and we dont know why. I can't see fuel pressure unfortunately, and its the stock regulator. We were thinking the fuel pump is wiggin out and just sending fuel? Then I wondered about that smell of plastic or rubber and wondered if something happened to my engine harness (it's wrapped).

Sorry the log has been cut really short because of character limitations on the board.

RPM would be really nice to have... In the log, where you see the AFR drop down to 9.6-9.7, we were actually cruising down, idling (as seen in -21 vaccuum). It would smoke a lot and very slowly climb back up to more normal values.

Injectors sticking, MAF gone bad ???

Maybe an injector is stuck open and the car cannot compensate? Just a thought.

I dunno, Im gunna try cleaning my MAF tonight, as well switch with Madelinot to see if that helps. Us Ottawa guys are all alone up here, have to figure things out for ourselves.

I had the Greddy injectors flow tested and cleaned prior to using them...

How long ago was it that the injectors were inspected/cleaned?
I would think that if it is a MAF issue, that you never would have been able to "floor it" through and retain boost like you stated in the original post...

Like a month ago?

How can I verify if it's the injectors? Take them back to have them looked at?

I don't seem to be able to "floor it" through anymore after last night, just got worse and worse, car hesitates, starts dumping fuel and I smoke out the neighbourhood.

Well the silliness continues, Im a man of logic, for something to happen there has to be a reason, and when there isn't or I can't figure it out it really bugs me.

At Pauls tonight, we pull the MAF, clean it, pop it back in.

We pull the codes on the car.

-------- ECU --------

Found: 3 codes!
**********
P0172,Fuel System Rich, Bank 1
**********
P0340,CMP (Cam Shaft Position) Sensor (Phase)
**********
P0345,CMP Sensor (Phase)

I knew about the Rich code, however 2 others snuck in there, might need a new sensor, not sure, have to watch and see?

We clear the codes and head out to see what happens.

Nothing happened. LOL

The car was driving like nothing ever happened again, we tuned and beat on it for an hour.

No codes, no issues, no smell, no nothing.

I can't explain it.

We leaned the car out some more, running rouhgly around 11.3AFR now...nice. Car pulls and feels awesome.

Found this; will they warranty a highly modified car? Otherwise I can just buy the sensors?

Recall Reason ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
Recall Date NOV 17, 2003
Model Affected G35
Potential Units Affected 630000

Recall Summary
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE CIRCUIT BOARD FOR THE CRANK POSITION SENSOR OR CAM POSITION SENSOR MAY HAVE AN IMPROPER SOLDER JOINT DUE TO SOLDER DEFORMATION CAUSED BY HEAT STRESS ACCELERATED BY THE EXISTENCE OF FLUX RESIDUE DURING THE SOLDERING PROCESS.

Consequence
THIS COULD CAUSE THE "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" WARNING LIGHT TO COME ON, CREATE A NO START CONDITION, CAUSE REDUCED ENGINE POWER, OR CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STOP RUNNING WITHOUT WARNING DURING VEHICLE OPERATION, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.

Remedy
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE CRANK POSITION SENSORS. CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR(S), AND IN SOME CASES, THE VARIABLE TIMING CONTROL SENSOR(S). VEHICLES INVOLVED IN A PREVIOUS RECALL CAMPAIGN, 01V357, ARE ALSO INCLUDED IN THIS NEW CAMPAIGN. THE REPLACEMENT SENSORS USED IN THAT CAMPAIGN ARE ALSO AFFECTED. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON DECEMBER 22, 2003. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261 OR INFINITI AT 1-800-662-6200.
