Default SHAFT PLAY!?

and not in a sexual sense either

traded my 18g's + cash to another member on here for a set of 60-1's rebuilt by forced performance, with 1800miles on them i was told. i was checking them out last night, and i noticed the turbo wheel wiggles slightly from side to side, but doesnt come into contact with the turbo housing whatsoever. im doing a high hp build and while i know a little shaft play is acceptable, how much i unacceptable? how bad would it hurt performance? should i opt for a rebuild? get my old stuff back? help me out guys im bummin

I've always understood that a few mm side to side is okay..up and down play is bad news..cheer up..they should be fine..

Sorry to hear. If you are not happy with it then get yours back.

Hope everything works out.

i think under .050" play is acceptable. Check with a dial indicator and see what you got.

I recently bought a brand new Garrett 60-1, and when I recieved it I wanted to see how much play a new turbo has. I was actually suprised at how much sideways play there is, but it's brand new from a reputable dealer so it has to be ok. I'v never had a turbo in my hands so it's all new to me, but from what I have read side play is ok. If it has vertical play then that is a big problem.

a small amount of play is normal especially in ball bearing turbos.

Based on your description, the shaft play is fine. Shaft play is usually within spec, or the wheel is done and wobling all over the place. Not really much middle ground.

just make sure the wheel doesnt contact the housing! some play is fine, once oil fills the cartridge it doesnt move as much.

I noticed the same thing about the 60-1s when I bought a kit from a guy. I was told the same thing. BB turbo has a lil shaft play side to side but should be far from touching sides.
