Default High HP twinned cars

Just an observation. I was using mobil 1 0w-40 since I got the car a year and a half ago. Friend of mine convinced me to try Torco SR-5 5w-30. With the mobil one I would be a quart low after about 1000 miles. After 2500 on the torco the level is the same as when I put in 6 fresh quarts. That crap is expensive as hell but it sure seems to make a difference.

I prefer Schaeffer's oil 20w-50, but I am currently running Motul 10w-40 (way to expensive IMHO).

yeah I used Mobil 1 0W40 at first but it is too thin and was consuming oil like you, I have switched to conventional 10W40 and things improved greatly, thinking of going to synthetic 20W50 next

I think the 0W40 is fine for boosted stock motors with tighter clearances but the built motors with bigger clearances should use a thicker oil

I'm running Rotella T Synthetic 5w40 and haven't burned any oil in 3 oil changes.

***Edit***

I'm still on the stock block. 50% Normal driving 50% Hard driving.....racing.

The turbos that run really thin oil may consume some oil through the seals. If you don't have some sort of crankcase breather you will consume a little as well. If you run a scavange system you will consume a little as well. Yes these do add up over time. But if you are boosted you should be checking your oil more regularly anyway. But if you found an oil that consumes less thats sweet.

I don't see how using a different oil of the same viscosity will reduce oil burn. I figure the viscocity ratings are standardized and have to meet a certain viscosity vs temperature trend in order to pass the standards. For that reason, I think the reason why you're burning less is cause you used a thicker oil.
I don't have a turbo car or built motor, but I used to use 0W-40 mobil 1 and I burned about 3/4ths of a quart per 3500 mile change. I switched to 10W-40 and now i do not burn nearly as much, and what I do lose I catch in my catch can.

edit: I did notice my oil pressures were higher, so now I let the car warm up for 2 or 3 minutes before driving.

I've had the same results using the Rotella T Syn 5w40 - no oil burnoff. Last oil change I switched to Mobil 1 5w40 TurboD and I've burnt 3/4 qt in 2500 mi. Will be going back to the Rotella.

Edit: Built block

what people need to specify to make this worth while is if they are built or stock motor

I assumed that when the OP said HIGH HP he meant built but either way this kind of info is useless if people don't specify if they are built or stock.

Also specify how hard you drive the car. Oh wait, these are the Z forums, everybody drives super hard and never has problems...

In all seriousness I currently run cheap dino oil. 10w-40. Driving how I drive I burn about 1/4 qt every 1000 miles or so, once I switch to Synthetic and thicker oil I dont expect this to consume as much as now-both my built motors burned regualr stuff like it was free. Realize I am on the second oil change at approx 2300 miles on the motor. Damn I gotta drive my $hitbox more...

My old motor would consume anywhere from 3/4-1 qt every 3000-3500 miles. Mobil 1 Euro 0w-40 but I dont know if I'll run that thin again.

I should have said so...yes built motor. Like I said though..its just an observation I made...interesting about the mobil one...I need to investigate it myself but was told mobil oil is "class 3 stock" shitty oil I was told..?!

Mobil 1 has always done good in my oil analysis, even in comparison to Motul. People tallk about alot of $hit they cant backup. 100% of the time, 95% of the people in this forum are FOS...

I agree, my switch from Mobil 1 0W40 was not due to quality issues but just that I thought it was too thin for the clearances plus with the Darton sleeves I thought maybe I switched to synthetic too early, so for both reasons I went to conventional Valvoline 10W40, next step will probably be back to a synthetic in a couple of oil changes and 20W50

yeah because most of these "I don't burn any oil" people are probably stock motors

Built motor, Mobil 1 10W-30 (hey it gets cold here at nights even in the spring/fall)
I drive.....um.......like driving miss daisy......NOT. I drive HARD!!!!!!

I consume like 3/4 of a quart/3000miles. I do have a scavage tank setup so when I get off the gas after a long pull I get "the puff", don't know how much of it is that vs crankase blow-by vs turbo seals vs pure consumption

But I agree all built motors are going to consume some (hey race cars burn oil and drip oil)

HKS 5W50. This blue oil is pretty good in my book. Haven't done any oil analysis, but my butt sensor tells me he likes the oil of my choice..
