Question Walbro installed... car stalls on startup..

I installed the Walbro gss342 and performed the swirl jet modification during the process. My car still has the stock injectors in them. After the install, the car started up perfectly and ran great. I took it for a few spirited runs and let the car idle for a bit in my driveway. I shut the car off for a few seconds and turned it back on again. This time, the car starts, but than the rpms fall below idle and stalls out. If I start it up and give the gas pedal a tap to keep the rpms up a bit, the car idles like normal and drives perfectly. What could be wrong? Thanks

My car is pretty much stock. The only thing I did do differently was use a different filter screen. I nicked the stock one and put a tiny hole in it, so I took a filter from a Walbro install kit for a different car. The filter is slightly bigger than stock and does not have the spring that keeps it inflated inside. I can't see how it would make a difference though. I started my car a few times not so long ago and its been starting up fine, so I hope it was just the computer relearning.

why do you have an aftermarket fuel pump in your car? why are you posting in the FI section? not trying to be an azz, just curious. the mod seems superfluos.

I am installing the STS kit as we speak. I did the Walbro first so that I could run the car a few times and make sure I did everything right, before ripping everything else apart. If there is a problem after everything gets put on, I could at least eliminate this as a source.

pull the pump, check all your connections and reinstall it.

A guess,
but higher capacity fuel pump may be supplying too much fuel pressure for the stock injectors and computer to cope with when warm.

When cold the engine is demanding more fuel, but once warmed up the injectors send less fuel. But now you have more flow/pressure behind them so you could be flooding out the engine at warm idle.

^^^^This makes no sense because the vortech setups utilize not only a bigger fuel pump on stock injectors, but also an FMU.

My main guess FWIW, is that your stock ECU and fuel map is thrown off too much with the different fuel pump without the new EMS and/or tune.

Um I'm wasn't an english major, but thats the exact same thing I said.

He has nothing to adjust for the added fuel pressure (i.e. FMU, EMS, regulator, or whatever you want to use)

Let me know when you get the STS kit in and we can tune it for you. I have tuned about 5 of them and one with a built motor and upgraded turbo that made well over 600whp.

exactly what drill bit did you use for the swirl jet? And also you make no mention of drilling out the regulator. Did you skip this step?

Did you disconnect your battery during the install? If you did, then you just need to do an idle air re-learn. That is probably why it dies on start up, but otherwise runs normally.

If you did the swirl jet mod correctly, you will see no more fuel pressure than stock, and the engine should operate just like stock.

I drilled out the swirl jet with a 1/16 which equates to .063". I used a 7/64 for the regulator. I did disconnect the battery during the install. How do I go about doing idle air relearn... just let it idle for a while? Thanks for all the help

It will learn itself if you just keep driving it. But if you want to force the learn..follow these procedures.

That may be your issue. That spring is necessary to keep the filter from getting sucked up and block the intake on the bottom of yoru fuel pump.
