Am I Finally Hearing the 'Annoying' Vortech BPV Whistle?
I had even thought about just running the bypass back into the intake and get rid of the high air flow and whistle sounds all together . It will hurt perfomance slightly though
^^yeah i thought about doing that but i dont mind the air flow sound driving i just wanted to get rid of the high pitched whistle at idle when the car was warming up which i did but still vortech should warranty a new bypass valve just because it should not do it.... but anyway as far as the faulty bpv whistle i thought vortech fixed it in the newer kits cause i dont hear of it happening with them but i guess not or somehow op got an older bpv thrown in...My kit i bought brand new just a year ago but it was a leftover at grubbs infiniti and was on there shelf for years and actually was produced in 03 so i kind of expected to have it with my kit and just put the band aid on it and never worried about it, but i will say the older kits are the reliable ones that dont have the bearing problems that are known, and grubbs upgraded me to the newer belt layout before shipping me my kit so i was happy happy...knock on wood to no bearing problems

my filter came in today and i just got done putting it on the BPV. the fit is really tight between the coupler on the charge piping and my sway bar (see pix below). was this a tight fit for anyone else?

if u faced it the other way, it prolly wouldnt bunch like that. no problem with it like that though.
so did it fix your problem?
I always wanted to put a filter on my BPV bc i did all my long trips without a cog belt. When the blower is not spinning all your air is coming in the BPV. So I effectively prolly did 8000 miles with no air filter.

no mine is not that tight between the sway bar but did it work for u? is the whistle still there? if there is no compressor surge then ur good to go, but im betting it didnt change anything..sorry if my spelling is off im pretty drunk..lol
does that hks bolt right up? is that the only one? does anyone have a link to a bypass valve that bolts right up to the current spot with no modification?

thanks for the replies guys. i took the car for a spin with the filter on and didn't hear any noises. got into boost a few times and didn't hear any surge or flutter. we'll see if its a long term solution - the whistle is fickle and may very well show up again. also, FWIW, the piece of fabric i used as a temp solution performed great all week with no noises or whistles whatsoever.
anyway, i'm a little concerned about the filter getting beat to hell by the sway bar under load so i'll spin the valve around on saturday when i have access to a friend's pit. it looks like turning the valve around will require me to remove the little panel that separates the engine bay from the bottom of the wheel well. not a big deal...all comes down to what I can live with
thanks again for the replies folks, i'll keep you posted with any new developments.

what EMS do you use and do you have a no cog belt map? i've been thinking of switching to Osiris and would like a highway/no cog belt map that would deliver fuel more appropriate for non-boost use.
my bpv faces the wheel and my filter is not bunched, i cut out some of the plastic for the wheel well with a dremel...what did that peice of fabric or whatever u used look like?
when i flipped my bpv over i didn't have to remove any fender well plastic. Just remove the under car deflector (that i keep removed all the time since i'm OCD about checking everything). It gave me plenty of access and took all of 5 minutes to switch around.
anyone know where to get these filters cheaper? they are like 13$ from vortech plus another 12$ shipping. A little high for a tiny filter. 13$ is reasonable but the outrageous shipping vortech charges isn't. someone needs to send them a memo about 4.95$ priority mail.

+1 when i looked at it again today in better light, i can see that i'll just have to remove one piece of plastic to get the bpv to face the other way. the filter may touch the wheel well liner, but it shouldn't be a big deal.
btw, you can get the filter from summit for $13.95. they don't have it in immediate stock, but with shipping, you're probably less than $20.

yeah thats about what i was gonna do with ur first mod there to keep it quiet...same as mine if i divert the air a little it doesnt whistle...what is that fabric u used?
as far as flipping it around no i didnt need to cut anything then but with the filter on i had to do a little trimming..nothing big and allows me to check everything over easily now..i too have ocd and get under my car all the time just to look things over...

the fabric is just a used piece of tech flex i had lying around after my wire tuck. you can get it at most electronic stores, but honestly, a piece of an old sock would do just as well, lol
