My car stays in boost when I drive it. I dont daily drive the car but when I do I drive it VERY hard.

What was your AFR at most of the time? I keep mine under 11.0 mostly...possibly keep it cooler. Also I have a oil cooler.

I daily drive my car ( or did anyways ). I would do about 80 miles a day...and there is not a single time that I get in it that it doesn't see a few WOT runs..lol.

My A/F was in the mid 11's.

It was also the first time I EVER tune a VQ ( no knock sensors to help me out ) and I admit that sometimes ( few times ) I could hear knock, though I would let off and retune it to make it go away.

It was fun while it lasted though...now it going to be more fun...I hope.

I disagree. VQ crankshafts are beastly. In fact, I don't know of anyone under 900whp that has broken one besides you.

I've romped on my car daily for 4 years over 500whp with a stock crank and it's still running perfectly. I've gotten into some knock while tuning. That's part of the game. Hell, my meth pump failed and I got some pretty severe knock last fall, but again, the motor is still fine and I don't have a crank that's broken in two places.

The pully sounds like it was your problem.

It was stock

Hopefully with his new build he will go with a heavier one like ATI or Fluidampr

no, stock Crankshaft pulley.. his Crankshaft pulley cracked, when the engine failed..
to begin with he hoped it was only the pulley that was a problem..
but found out the whole crankshaft was in 2-3 pieces..

thats why ppl are saying that the pulley/crankshaft was out of balance.

Exactly, cranks don't just crack in half (especially really good forged units like the VQ crank) from modest power.

Fatigue failure...High frequencies not adequately dampened....Over time micro cracks develop into major cracks and failure!

There had to be a number of things wrong when you look at the big picture. Low horsepower for 17psi, spark blow out at what is realistically low boost and now a motor that has a tremendous amount of damage from modest power levels.

^+1

the power levels were no where near high enough to bust a crank all by itself. the rods woulda tore in half way before that.

GT-er is probably right, he did all the damage himself. He heard all the noises.

But like he said, time to rebuild so on to better stuff. i'd imagine the spark issue, etc will all be gone with a new motor.

Yowza! Good luck with the rebuild. I like your realistic look to the situation.

I guess only God knows what came first, the crank pulley damage or the engine damage. Regardless, the outcome is the same.

It's my first engine ever to go to the trash after about 10 years of FI on various cars doing all the work myself so I guess it had to happen sooner or later. I can even kinda consider myself lucky since I know people who break EVERY engine they build...lol.

As for the issues I've had, I don't believe my car was necessarily underpowered as I have been to 3 different dyno's down here and they all tell me I have taken the most powerful Vortech VQ they had ever seen. Considering I have a 5AT and 60+lb wheels, I don't think 417whp@17psi is all that bad on a bone stock engine ( no cams ) and an incomplete tune.

My spark blow out issues were because I was dumping too much fuel and my wideband wasn't picking it up ( A new sensor and calibration made me realize that problem ). After that spark blowout was non existent.

that sucks

also don't forget that there are instances of bad cranks in every car. You could have had a bad piece of metal in your crank somwhere that caused it to be weaker than other cranks. It's a small percentage of error but it can happen.

Good Lord! Broke that whole front main right off the block. I had one engine I tore down that had bent nearly every rod it had, I've seen VG30's break cranks at really high HP levels, seen an HR piston get shattered and annihilate the cylinder... I don't think I've seen a DE crank broken in half like that.

Good luck with your new build. Kyle at IPP gets cores all the time and may be able to hook you up considering that your block is now a giant paperweight.
