Default FI guys, aftermarket oil press sensor location?

Ok, so i'm adding an oil pressure sensor to my g35 due to the recent desctruction of my engine with the factory oil light not saving me.

So my questions are this:

Do I have to keep my OEM oil pressure switch? If i remove it will the light stay out?

If i have to keep it where should i put my secondary sensor? I don't want to add another T fitting on there because that seems too risky for me. I have an oil spacer but it's just for my oil cooler. It only has the 2 large ports on it and no small 1/8" npt ports.

My only other option is to drill out that ball thing on the front and use that area but i tried this on my other block and i think i'm going to ruin the oil pan trying to get it out. I would rather just remove the OEM sensor and put my aftermarket one in its place.

Thoughts from guys that do their own builds and know a lot about this. Rich, i know you have a g35 so maybe you can help.

Also, if anyone konws where i can get a Defi Racer oil pressure gauge to match my gauges i would appreciate it. Cheapest I found was 189$ and i'm on a budget since it's going to cost me about 5k$ for my trip to New Zealand in May. I'll take a used gauge.

thanks guys!

Jeff

You could drill a 1/8" npt port in the oil filter sandwich adapter. Or buy a Greddy and slap that on top. Those are 1/8" bsp, so you still need to tap for NPT.

I’m interested in this too, I bent a rod last month and I’m planning on adding an oil pressure sensor on my G35 Coupe too. I’ll be using a sensor from ProEFI though; going to incorporate that into the ProEFI can gauge system.

raj, i don't want to add another area for an oil leak so no second plate. Also the one i have is a thermostat controlled unit so i'm afraid i might not be getting oil pressure to the sensor when the unit isn't heated up. I also don't like drilling into a 90$ tstat controlled adapter.

you can put it anywhere. i have mine on a T on the same line that feeds my turbos.

On my vortech setup, i just drilled and tapped the sandwich plate.

That's just it, i have my oem sensor already on a T on the line that supplies my turbos so it makes me nervous to have a string of 2 T's back to back. I don't trust those cheap fittings.

Jeff - I may do this in the coming week (Tuesday), if I find a good spot I will take a pic to share. +1 on gauges being crazy, I just dropped $530 on oil pressure, oil temp and voltage.... this car is a black hole of need, at least my kid gives me a hug or a Thanks Dad every once and a while.

I used the Greddy oil sandwich adapter for my gauges and removed the factory sandwich and put it in a Mocal and a Earl's cooler

I can weld two T's together for you if you are worried about leaks. It would go in the OEM OPS location as it is now.

the issue with extending off the oem location is you start running out of room. I personally have both turbos feed lines and the sensor off the stock location and Im close to hitting... the sway i think... not under there right now to look. I know some people in the past that have tried to extend it to much and have snapped them. once again this is a 350z not g35 so not sure the clearance issues there.

Maybe look into earls fittings or brand like that fro a T block that has multi ports. Similar to a brake system.

just my .02

Gord has a G35 so I think he is saying he pulled the dummy light sensor and put the gauge there.

found out last night that the sender grounds thru the body of the sensor, so if you have it attached to a hose it doesnt work.

You just have to put a little hose clamp around the metal and get a wire to ground - or ground the ground wire. I think a sandwich spacer is much more solid than having a long row of fittings sticking out.

Jeff, just drill and tap the spacer you use now. You won't screw it up. Inside the ring there is always pressure.

I thought about that after, if you're not using a standalone you might not be able to pull the stock sensor out? Would it cause the car to go into limp mode?
