Default Built 37VHR's

Talking to a mechanic he said if you remove the heads from a VVEL engine they can't just go back on like a HR/DE. Basically you have to order new heads from the factory with things aligned and locked in a certain way for install. Like something springs out of wack once they come off...this is my interpretation of what he said so don't quote it LOL

Anyone know of a built VQ37VHR?

Shouldn't this be in the 370 tech section?

to my understanding the vvel is **** when trying to make any power on a built block, from what ive gathered people doing built vhr's + twins swap to the normal HR heads with the 3.7 shortblock

can't run a stock hr head on a stock vhr shortblock... the exhaust valve will contact the piston... there is no exhaust valve releif on the vhr piston...

vhr is a great design... it is limited with the little exhaust cams that are in it (and no exhaust retarders)

no one wants to spend the money to have a custom piston and exhaust cam made to extrude the maximum power out of the vhr... plus to build a short block is $3000 in labor + machining + parts... and I am one of the few people that have torn down and reassembled a vhr (mostly stock NA rebuilds)

and a VVEL assembles one way and one way only... if you eff it up it won't start... no need to replace actuators or position sensors

^ thats what I was thinking , if you take the vhr apart and asemble it the way FSM says it should work. Who ever tore down the vhr and rebuild it and decided you need new heads from factory should not touch another car.

most auto shops don't have any FSM, at least in my area. I always follow it when I work on these cars.

heads can come off, be disassembled and put back together without ordering new.

My best friend is a master technician for a BMW/infiniti dealership in indianapolis. This mechanic you talk of is just making **** up.

only heads ive ever heard of being replaced when coming off is northstar caddy heads............... and thats because they almost always have fried valve guides by 30k miles and you cant replace them. usually just replaced the whole engine though because the bearings would be toast too.

the FSM says to replace the VVEL actuator... $1000 each (one per bank) and the VVEL position sensor $750 each (one per bank)... then need Consult 3 ($12,000) to position the sensor correctly... and steps in the FSM like "do not remove any BLACK bolts" and one of the bolts needed to be removed is BLACK, gets really confusing... It is alot of professional experience needed to properly assemble the engine since some left bank and right bank parts are interchangeable, and improper placment will cause a no start and the need for complete disassembly... 37VHR is for experts ONLY!!!

that could work but then you need to swap in the 07-09 350z parts to make it run... that makes for spending alot of $$$

I didn't say it was cheap. I said that's what people building them for big power do.

The FSM also states that for the vq35de do not take apart the cam gears intake or exhaust.. I took my apart to clean them after my spun bearings. There was so much **** in there....
I assembled the with no proble. So why does the manual states not to remove any of the bolts??

I think what he meant which I interpreted a bit different is that at the dealer they order new heads rather than re-using old heads if they ever have to take them off because it's such a PITA to deal with. I found this interesting so I posted up looking for experiences with built VHR blocks, assuming people are still using the VHR heads which doesn't appear to be the case (HR head swap for example...). This guy I spoke to is a infiniti master mechanic; NOT an engine 'builder', he probably only does assembly on rare occasions.

I guess confidence in their mechanics varies from dealership to dealership. Duke said the infiniti guys don't order new heads at Dreyer unless they have been damaged.

What's funny is the fact that they don't want a person with experience building engines and working on cars taking them apart because they are afraid they won't put it back together correctly yet the hourly factory worker that has no experience in being a mechanic assembles these engines.
