550whp seems to be the cutoff for any build 5at. 700whp? no way.

+1

If your goal is 700whp with an auto trans, you should be looking into a TH400 or 4L80e swap.

I don't know jack about FI, but per SFR's website they say it CAN hold 750 WHP...I dunno if anyone's tested it.

I've spoken to several people who had built trannies to handle more than 550whp, and they've all broken. Rebuilt multiple times too. I don't buy it for a second. Why I swapped to manual in the first place.

The answer is NO, nobody has tested and successfully gotten a built 5AT to hold anything close to 750whp ...not even SFR who has been advertising it as such.

Yep. The only people I've seen with built 5AT's that enjoyed decent longevity were guys who didn't exceed 500-550whp. rcdash and mrg1981 are good examples that quickly come to mind.

After a very long hiatus, I'll finally resume my car project in a few months and have decided to keep my built 5AT and enjoy the car at 500-500whp until I can afford the trans swap to push it beyond 700whp.

Nice man.
Mine's running, with some leaks and fuel system issues that are getting fixed.

Shoulder's shot (got my mri today) which explains why every time in the past 5ish years I went to wrench on anything my arm hurts/is weak within 5 minutes. BUT I'm going to fix the major fuel leaks, trim up my VE tables, adjust my fuel pressure, fix the turbo oil leak, get that first warm up done and start polishing my turd.

You'd have to ask him. But he may just be the exception not the rule. If someone wants to go build an auto and try to make it last over 500whp, go ahead. It's your money not mine.

His trans did not hold well at that power level. Consider low 500s as max for a 5AT. There is no way to increase line pressure at high rpms and no way to increase the surface area for frictions (with current product offerings and no real R&D going on anymore for the 5AT).

I like this info. I have a built 5at, Transgo, and a Stillen Trans cooler. JTran is starting fab work on my single turbo this week. They are setting me up with 10-12 psi wastgate to get started. They have a customers G35 with a JWT Twin Turbo and a SFR 5at that has been running at 500+ for around three years. I'd like to run my car "as is" for a while before having to make a decision on a replacement transmission. Is 500ish the max anyone on here has ran successfully for an extended period?

I'd rather sell the built 5at while it's working rather than tear it up. Selling it could fund a large percentage of a 6mt swap.

Edit: I read the responses above. I am fishing for more input, or more elaboration.

I don't really meet the criteria since I'm only at 490whp and had a built GTM tranny for just over 2 years, but everything is holding up fine for me. Thats with multiple track days, plenty abuse with drag radials and not babying the car.

IMHO 6mt swap is still the overall best bang for buck trans swap.

Cool. Thanks guys. I'll see where this single ends up and tune it for around 500. I'm sure the 6mt swap will come soon after.

what trans controller are you going to use? What bellhousing adapter? hybrid torque convertor?

Thats about 10g in parts for a 4l80e, plus any fabrication needed to fit around exisitng turbo kit.

Please post your build as you install the TCI!

Jim Cooper with his G37 5AT did pretty well with a level10 built tranny. Close to 600HP with lots of passes on the strip.

Not really 600 Whp. Good runs for a 500 whp car though.
