Hey Subd...you got 10post thus far, no one knows you, no one knows your knowledge base … start your build thread, show the forum you know what you're talking about, show the forum that theres action behind those words. And don't alienate anyone … Sonic the hedgehog could quite possibly give you advice that'll save you thousands of dollas and hours of heartache … if this is too much to ask, see yourself to the door … consider posting on 350z tech … some good stuff over there.

OP - what are you tuning with? Something that hasn't come up is the timing map? Do you have a stupid-safe timing map where you know you wont pre-det? How are you controlling your air:fuel ratios? Do you have closed-loop fuel control?

From reading between the lines - assuming your timing is safe and your AFRs are in check go and do your break-in prior to your tune...Id also consider getting 1000, or 2000 miles on the engine before your tune. I like what Conway said in getting thick thick thick conventional oil, change at 50miles, 100miles and 500 miles.

If you want to go one step further, at the 50mile change consider a dignified break-in oil such as the Driven line of oils.

Drive the car conservatively, give the engine a proper warm up and cool down and listen for anything out of the ordinary.

I’m on the break it in the way it’s going to be driven thing.

How well do you trust the knock sensor to pull timing on the 11.5 motor if there is an issue? If you trust it, put some miles on it and keep the load off it as much as possible, if not, break it in on the dyno while getting tuned.

I respectfully disagree with Terra (and he's a 5%-er) … I think there are too many things that can go catastrophically wrong (tuning aside) that otherwise would be caught if you take it easy on the engine the first few hundred miles.

1) Heat cycle, change oil

2) Run up and down street going higher and higher in rev range and engine breaking back down to speed, change oil. Or do this on dyno

3) put on dyno and make power pulls to tune

4) go beat **** out of it.

Dyno is not hard on an engine at all, its a controlled environment with little drive train shock. Street driving is harder on everything.

/insert MJ eating popcorn

That being said I have no idea on break-in for a rebuilt engine.
I've only rebuilt one engine completely (stock G10(Don't be jealous that I had the opportunity to work on one of these)) and I didn't break it in at all.

Thanks for the input! I'll be tuning with upRev and will be tuned by Moncef from AdminTuning who's going to deal with all of that. So it would actually be safe to break-in without any type of tune on stock ECU? Multiple people have said yes, but a base map is recommended so the break-in is a lot smoother and safer.
