hi folks. I am considering selling one of my toys which after will leave me with exactly 2000. I was considering looking for a used kit that I can install like the powerlab kit or something similar that has the better clamps and hoses and so on. I致e installed many of the Vortec kits on other cars but never a Z. Can you folks tell me if I should be able to get a full kit for 2000? I知 wanting something that is drop in and drive ready too, not part one of an install. I want to be able to drive the car after the install (unsure if the pump and injectors are required up front, and what about ecu map?)... I知 not looking to build a race car, would love to see 400+ whp. My car has stock internals and low milage with good compression tests... to make it more interesting it is my daily... so I知 also wanting it to stay reliable too.
Im not sure what I値l do. I thought I壇 start here and see what you guys had to say. I know I can get a kit for the money. I知 just not sure about the other parts and a tune and so on.
Complete sc kits ususally sell used $3-5. One in this price range prolly needs rebuilding. Check the Marketplace here every week or so and join your local Z FB group.
I知 looking to do a turbo kit. I mentioned Vortec because that痴 what I have the most experience with. Are the used Turbo kits the same? I was looking at a rev9 kit new for around 2000. If I知 way off I値l just hold on this idea, or put the money elsewhere.
I would think you can get a pretty good used kit that's ready to install for $2500 - $3000. Add the aforementioned items above and you're in the $4k to $5k range when it's all said and done.
You guys have pretty much talked me out of trying to do a budget turbo install. All I have to work with is 2K and I drive the car st least one day a week.
Now im wondering about just doing a tune. I値l come back to a turbo kit when I have 5-8k free money.
You guys think a tune tune is worth it? I have the following that I k ow of:
kitetix intake (yes I know it looks better than it works)
exhaust
cold air intake

Anytime there are changes to engine breathing, e.g. intake, exhaust, cams etc., you pretty much NEED to tune to extract the most from the mods. They're not worth doing without changing ECM parameters to match. People are want to say "All I got out of a tune was 20hp at the wheels." Hate to disillusion anyone but one can certainly feel the difference that 20whp makes. No, its not like you strapped on a snail but it is worthwhile.
Thanks for your opinion. Do you think I will get more out of a tune if I do something like a Haltech or a Link G4+ Extreme? Or just Osiris Uprev over factory ecu?
I would just save your $2k and chunk money towards a turbo kit ... NA mods will give you additional power but you'll blow your $2k for a 30hp gain. Save another $2k-$3k as quick as you can, keep your eye out for a good deal and you can gain 130hp for $5k.
Do you have emissions where you live?
Stick with Uprev. Unless you can find a decent deal on a redbox or silver box haltech. a link is $1200 plus tuning and is WAYYYY more ECU than you need...especially if you're on a budget, especially if you're looking to run a near-stock block, especially if you want in the 400hp range.
No emissions. So I can do whatever. You make a good point... instead of just spending the money I could just save up or buy some parts now and more later till I have all I need to get the install in (I can do that) and have it tuned.
So with no emissions you may be able to take advantage of a standalone that takes the OBDII out of the equation.
Save the cash and keep an eye out. I just sold my complete twin turbo setup for $2900 and aside from some optional extras it was 100% complete. I know a few other people who've sold their setups for less ... you just have to keep an eye out and be cash-ready when they do come up.
Between now and then read as many turbo build pages you can find. Read what others have done, what they didnt do, what they shouldve done. Take this waiting time to educate yourself.
Read the Top 50 FI builds thread - from there, find people who have done what you want to do ... mimic their setups and dont reinvent the wheel.
Start a build thread right now ... even if you dont know exactly what kit / setup you want start a build thread, start a conversation, ask questions, start your research there - .
I have a few guys messaging me for some deals on kits (used) but they have everything... also haltec, injectors, and pump. If I decide to go this route I値l just need to save up for the tune. One kit is a single and one is a twin.
Also do I have my bike up for trade too (this is where my cash will end up coming from) or I may trade for a car that has the parts I want and pull them... would like to have a second drivesnle car after (looking for something to give my kid)...
once I decide I値l start the build thread and see what I can work out.
The Twin turbo kit:

The kit includes the following:

Denso drop in 550 injectors
aam oil pan spacer
all steel braided oil feed and return lines
walbro 255 fuel pump

Turbonetics blow off valve and wastegate
I also have new wastegate recirculation pipes plus pipes to run the kit open dump off the wastegate
Aem air/fuel ratio gauge and O2 sensor

I壇 be selling/trading my bike to get the kit... I would rather hold off I think... my goal was to end up with a car for my kid to drive. Need to think on it. But both of these sound like s good start to get it all sorted out.
