What BOV to get
Hey all! Havent posted in a few weeks.
Well, just as always, or so it seems with this car. Everything I ordered is supposedly in stock...then...it's not.... So i have to order another BOV from another company. I originally ordered a GReddy type-s BOV. I took a look at hop-up racing's page on the type-s and it says it handles up to 400hp. My car is over that, or really close at least with a dyno of 355rwhp. So is that # true...or should i go with type R? Hop up also recommended the Blitz supersound BOV, I think thats what its called, and they have that in stock.... I was just wondering on anyones opinions.... Or if it will even fit between the IC and the MAF? It looks bigger than the type-s... I did a search on BOV on the forums and there is some error...so i hope this didnt come up before....
I am also gonna order the DEFI-link BF gauges. Im gonna order a Boost gauge, an EGT, and replace the Oil pressure gauge. Im getting the A/F gauges soon, and fuel press. But until then im looking for a place to put those to while keeping somewhat of a stock approach....dont want to make it too outright obvious i modded it.... But, whatever i have to do....any suggestions on where to put the other two of the 5 gauges....besides a pillar?
Oh....and I raced a corvette, one of the current models, and ate him up.... it was freaking great...

Welcome back...we missed you!
The Greddy Type S will work just fine even with 400rwhp. Since you'll be boosting less than 10psi to achieve those numbers, the race valve would be overkill. In fact, it would probably cause more compressor surge and not really vent all that well at lower psi, due to the stiffer spring.
I actually would recommend the HKS super-suequential valve. It is a better design than the Greddy, and it's designed so that it physically cannot leak boost under pressure. It also vents at all RPM's and PSI, rather than higher RPM's and PSI's. So, for instance, if you shifted at 2500rpm and you had 2psi of boost, you would still hear the BOV venting, where my Greddy Valve kinda sputters and doesn't really vent too well. I have heard nothing but great things about the HKS Super Seq, and its only about $25 more than the Greddy Type-S.
All of these BOV's will fit nicely between the intercoolor discharge pipe and the MAF, but of course, you'll need to remove your bumper to mount it, and it wont be visibile from the engine compartment. Don't mount the BOV after the MAF or you will likely have idling and stalling issues on decel, unless you make adjustments to your eManage.
For guages, I put the Profect in the Nav pocket, and I have an AEM A/F and Defi Mechanical boost guage that will be mounted on an A-Pillar. I wanted to leave the stock guages in the center dash, since I like the computer features, and those guage are further beyond my line of sight rather than an A-Pillar Mount.
Here is a pic of mine installed...I've posted this before.

thanks for the quick reply...nice talking to you again by the way! So how's the kit? Love it?
Yeah the HKS looks great, unfortunatley i called a few places and they are all out of stock and need to be "backordered" I hate that friggin word. I saw your pic of the BOV, looks nice. I just wasnt sure in size comparisons, since i knew it was much more of a smaller space.
As for the gauges....I know a pillar would be one way to go... but ive been in a car with one at night. The gauges seemed really bright and got annoying after about 5 min, thats why I would like to stray away from that if i could.
But really great news! The reason i have been away for the last week. I just got a new job with Cendant Mortgage in Mt. Laurel NJ, and I'll be able to dish out more money for my baby. (the car
) Ive read the post you started about piston compression. We'll see how the new job goes, I might be interested in replacing the internals myself. But my next step is to get these parts installed. Then on to Rims, and Brakes. Im beginning to consider the Wide body kit from TopSecret too! We'll see.

Very cool! congrats on the new job and thanks for the update.
Regarding the lights on the guages. With the Defi Guages, you'll find the light (at least on my mechanical guage) to very dim and pleasing to the eye...its is much softer and dimmer than the factory gauge lights...that's for sure.
For the BOV, if you can't find the HKS in stock, try Dynamic Autosports in Lake Forest, CA. I recall seeing that they had one in stock....almost positive they do. Tell them Sharif with the black 350Z Turbo send you...they all know me there. 949-457-1234 is their number.

thanks! I'll give them a call tomarrow.
Just wondering...didnt someone mention putting the trip display in one of the main gauges like the tach? I remember hearing about that. Im sure it would require some kind of laser cut, and you would have to remove the rev light? Anyone know?

BOV question here from a noob......
will the one that comes with the vortech kit i ordered be ideal for the s/c setup?? is there a better one, that will perform better too (sound is secondary to me really)
looking for opinions please...
oh yeah, welcome back (even though i never knew you were gone)....
this place has been a well of knowledge for me so far....

The standard BOV value on the Vortech is just fine. It vents to the atmosphere, and does the job. Functionaly, I dont think you could do much better. I guess the HKS super sequential would offer the same improvements in low psi venting conditions, so I suppose that would be an upgrade, if you felt to inclined. But personally, I'd put the $225 plus installation somewhere else.

any blow off valve that does not already come supplied with a kit will require welding. It's the mounting flange that actually "locks" the BOV to the piping. Not hard to do at all by any competant person.
As for the BOV's, if you guys need any, let us know- we carry em all from HKS, Greddy, SARD, ARC, Blitz, Turbo XS, Apexi. Not sure we never had the universal kits on our site, but I can get them all added tomorrow with pics and specs for each.
I have personall used the Type S on my own cars up to around 400 hp, and they worked just fine. I tend to prefer the HKS overall purely due to sound (it's louder!), and I have used them on my personal cars as well for a long time now (even going back to the old style plastic one). I have never had a problem with either of them. over the years, we have installed all the above units on customer cars as well, and have had the most consistent results with HKS, Greddy, Blitz and SARD. ARC works well too, but are a rare commodity.

I don't like the sound of the HKS. I just listened to the sound clips on the site Cheston posted above and the HKS sounds like a bird that got shot. I like the way the turbo xs sounds on the srt-4 on that site.

(along with about 80lbs of other blue and silver goodies!!!)
yippeeee!!!!
the quickening!!
i absolutely LOVE my HKS SSQV...
(good thing i bought it last year) hehe..
its a sharp burst... and it has three different inserts you can choose to change the noise.. purple. lower woosh noise, silver (default) and gold, which claims a super high pitch (but i have not heard it in person)
i had the Greddy TypeS before and it was decent.. i had spring problems... and it kept jamming open.. but that was a nice tone too..
Adam is right. u have to hear these in person to really get a feeling.. the website i posted should give you a general idea-..

so say I want to have a bov on my car. But we know in CA you will never pass smog so if i take it off and then have it smoged will the car operate normal on the smog machine?? or will I have to reprogram the ecu or something??
BOV will have no effect on tailpipe emmisions or your ECU programming. you run the same program with or without the BOV.
Also, just install the BOV after the intercooler, and it will be totally hidden by the front bumper. The smog tech cant see it...so you are fine. And you cant hear it unless you are on the boost...again...you are fine. Theyspin the rollers at 2500rpm or so...gradually...then hold it. They dont floor it or generate enough boost to blow your cover.
