Default super charge

to the guys with the superchargers, what are your first impressions after installing? such as vortech or stillen with 9 lb pulleys, is it good power throughout the power band? is it a whole different car? and why are some guys only putting down around 300whp w/ 9 lbs pulley, no tuning? i'm just worried spending 5k+ on something that will only give me around 300whp, are they just running too rich? w/ vortech and 9 lb pulley, how much whp can you get safely with decent rich a/f ?

is it driving a whole different faster car?

Take the time to read some of the many threads that deal with your questions. You will find hours worth of reading material. IMO it is worth the time to read these thread, if you are serious about this mod.

To briefly answer your questions though:

First impression = totally different car, incredible power, fire breathing.

Power does not start to come on until after about 2500 RPMS. This will be the case with the Vortech, ATI, and HKS. Stillen should get you power a little earlier, but it will also level off and not ramp up as the engine revs high.

For me, I like the Vortech because I can drive around normally and not be in boost. This keeps my gas mileage close to stock during normal driving and keeps my engine wear to a minimum.

If you take you car to a shop that knows what they are doing you should get between 360rwhp and 380rwhp with a couple of hours of tuning. Without tuning more likely to be about 330rwhp.

Safety was a primary concern for me. GRUBBS assured me that my level of performance is very safe. My A/F hovers right around 12:1 and they did pull timing.

Originally, I wanted to just have my Vortech installed with no tuning. I thought I would do the tuning later. However, after discussing it with GRUBBS I was convinced that for a couple of hundred dollars I could get 30 to 50 more rwhp, and have my coupe run better and safer than without tuning.

BTW, if you are going to have a pro install the kit, I think your cost estimate is a little low. Vortech with new plugs should be more like $6000 to $6500 after tax.

I agree. You want to have the air/fuel at 12:1. Some of the people on here are running leaner than 12:1, which will give the engine more hp, but pistons are expensive. The centrifical superchargers work great, giving these engine's boost where they need it the most. Off the line traction is limited anyway, so you might as well make the power where you can use it. Gas mileage with a centrifical is also really good. The thing I like about the ATI ProCharger set-up is that it has it's own oil supply. No oil hose routing, and no possible chance of oil contamination. Bob

I'm days from ordering my Stillen ST2 supercharger & I also had the same questions. Great answer! Thanks.

i would get stillen (g35 coupe) except that they make us get those big dumb goofy looking hoods to make it clear.... stillen seems like the best for my purposes (low end power), but i also like the idea of being able to drive around normally not boosting. I usually shift around 2500 rpm's and cruise at 2000 unless i really want that added speed. I like the idea of the seperate oil supply too tho.... hmmmm which s/c to go with....????

do the turbos (greddy, PE, etc) hold their own oil too? or is there an outside feed of sorts??? (draining-thru the unit completely)
