Smile My engine is here!

Well. I got an engine from a junkyard today. It came with everything but the flywheel/clutch, the rocker covers, and the plenum.

I e-mailed Sharif with the 3 initial pics I took..he'll post them.. I can never figure that out..

The engine kinda looked like crap.. honestly... It has only 950 something miles on it... but its been sitting in a junkyard for 6 months or so. Cool thing was the shop owner delivered it right to my garage and helped me set it up on the engine stand..

This is the first thing I have ever done myself on a car... so Im jumping in head first... even if I ****-up... it will probably be fun.

It took me three hours to remove the intake section below the plenum and some tube that connects both heads in the back.. (forgive me for the terminology.. i dont have my manual). I dont have some of the bits needed in metric sizes for my ratchet.. thats mainly why it took so long.. had to search for them and figure out what to do with the limited tools I had. Going to home depot tomarrow..

One word of advice.. when you have a few people telling you that its ok to turn the engine upside down.. all the oil is out by now... please dont believe them... I had a visit with Exxon's Valdez in my garage floor. (Another reason it took so long)..

I got to see the valves, and unfortunatley they have rust all over them... that sucks... who knows what that means about everything else... and the stuff that came out was like a brownish oily sludge... please tell me thats normal.....

Even if its bad news... Im ripping the engine apart, so its not really a huge deal. Just hope the crankshaft is in good condition.

Tomarrow and over the weekend im hoping to have the exhaust manifolds and both the upper and lower section of the oil pans off definatley.. maybe ill work my way into the timing case..

One more thing.. just to try I tried to turn the crank pulley but it wouldnt turn by hand... is that ok? Or does that mean i can look forward to some wonderful suprises inside??

Good thing for all of you who probably think I am an idiot for attempting this is... I am definatley getting a professional to assemble the bottom with all the new forged parts I get... Ill see how everything goes, I might try to put the rest back together.

Im probably gonna get SGP or someone to redo the heads with some good stuff too, from the looks of it I probably have to. I'll send pics of all the neat little things I come across... I know I'll have many questions.. hope you guys can help! Thanks

Sounds like the motor might have been hydro locked . If that is the case you might have some bent rods and maybe even a damaged crank . Let us know what you find as you take it apart.

the brown sludgy stuff is probably coolant in the oil. Could be a blown headgasket or something. I wouldn't worry, as long as the block is intack, the crank, and the cylinder walls. I guess you'll find out soon enough. Sounds like a fun project.

But wait...they guy told you the engine had 900 miles on it? And its in that condition? What did he say happened to the motor?

I will check my work email in a sec and post the pics.

Aaah **** man. That motor is fubared. Pull your motor and build the bottom end with forged internals. If your block is broken use the new block, have it built, and put all the parts (heads, timing parts and cover, etc) on the new built block then drop it in! Do it right man! If you need the FSM PM me, stick to the proper torque specs and procedures. If you rush through this project your gonna mess something up and have to do it again. Do it right the first time and be done with it. Built motor +1 bar of boost will put a big smile on your face man.

If you have a good core block I'll buy it off you. If the internals are blown that's fine, as long as the block/crank/bedplate and sleves are good I'll take it. PM me!

I think aluminum sitting out in a junkyard for 6 months doesnt make for a good project block. The cost of cleaning the block might just warrant buing a new one off the shelf.

Can you hydrostaticly test that block to make sure its sound?

Plan ahead and make sure you do it right the first time! Good luck.

Aluminum does not look like that after just a little water exposure for a few months. That block looks like it has been up close and personal with some kind of chemical....or salt water. To get rust on the cams the whole motor had to be submerged. I wouldn't be surprised if it came out of a car that was dumped into some salt water. YIKES!!

Tear down the parts you need and have them tanked at a machine shop.

My vette was in salt water flood and the motor looked EXCACTLY as that one does.
Id get the VIN off the block and run through CarFAX and see how the car met its death.
It would be a shame to build the motor then have it blow up because the block is weak from corrosion.

Dont worry too much yet. Any good machine shop with hydro test, shotpeen, chemical clean, etc...every block that comes to them. They certainly will not build a motor on a bad block. I think the motor just looks worse than it really is becuase of that degreaser stuff they put on it. Only time will tell.

Hey, if you don't mind me asking how much did the motor cost you? Did you find out what a new one cost? thanks, Zach

That does look like salt water corrosion, but I wouldn't worry abot that causing that much of a strenght problem. I'n four years on my ship, I've seen a fair amout of saltwater corrosion on alluminum, just get rid of it and move on, it would take YEARS for the structure of the block to be compomised. I'd be more concered about the inside of the block. Definately take it to a machine shop and have the sleeves/heads check out. Everyting else you should be able to see.

what are you planning to do with new engine? Are you reinforcing the internals for a TT kit?

good luck
