Default HKS supercharger installed!!!!!!!

Fit and finish: top notch. Everything was in the kit, everything fit perfectly. Materials obviously of high quality.

Sound: Nice Jet-engine whine. Exhaust sound through the Nismo exhaust is absolutely intoxicating

Dyno numbers:

stock w/ Nismo cat-back: 242rwhp @6000rpm/222lb-ft@4800rpm
air temp 75 deg.

HKSw/Nismo cat-back: 325rwhp@5600rpm/326lb-ft@4600rpm

air temp 65 deg.

I'll post driving impressions after break-in and a few good days behind the wheel.

A/F ratio was bascially around 12.5 throughout the power band.

Right on Speedracer. Nice dyno numbers. Please let me know if the power comes on at lower RPMs that most of the other centrifugal superchargers (Vortech, Procharger, etc.). I heard better low and mid RPM power than typical for centrifugal (rhymes! ha) is the deal with HKS..

Shouldn't that be more like 11.5 to 1 air/fuel ratio rather than 12.5? Isn't that a little lean? I'd heard this kit was to run just a little on the rich side of normal - say about 11 to 1 or so. With 11.5 to 1 being about perfect.

Please post on smoothness of throttle response as well. GOOD LUCK!

Install time was 20 hours including new plugs and high capacity oil pan.

A/F is actually damn good. On my two previous tuned FI cars, I tuned to 12-12.5 with good results.

Torque curve is not very flat at all. It drops off almost as quickly as it climbs after 4600 rpm. This is basically why you get a more conservative horsepower rating. This is also the reason, however, that this kit is safer with the stock internals and a slightly leaner A/F. The engine is less stressed at the critical higher rpm than some other set-ups.

Is the HKS box tunable? With our flimsy con rods, I would be tuning all F/I applications in the sub 12:0 range...thats just my opinion.

I'm also excited to see the trq curve, and how it builds...particularly in the lower RPM range.

I'm more interested in what the TQ curve looks like up to 4k.
Just trying ot mine some info for another poster considering either Vortech or HKS for is daly Auto driver.

Congrats on the kit !

I called HKS today and the rep repeated several times that they wouldn't have released the kit if it wouldn't pass CARB. He said the bulk of the time is spent getting the CARB #. Apparantly they were 6th in line a few months back and are now 3rd!

Thanks for keeping us updated Speedracer. I don't think anyone else with this system has posted (on any of the 350z boards) so we appreciate the info.

According to HKS USA there will be pulley/ecu upgrades available around March/Aprial 2005 but no word on what gains would be or their offerings.

Speedracer.

I was hoping that HKS was under estimating their numbers with 80 HP but appears that you are spot on with their claim. Your AF may be good but their may be improvement in the timing area.

this was a great post and right on time seeing as I am trying to make my mind up between the HKS and the vortech I like the vortech for hp gains but I want my car to last so I am starting to lean toward the HKS

Please post the dyno!

I also agree that 12.5 might be a little lean, especially considering that our plenum distributes air poorly. (at least in an NA setup) If that holds for fi, you could be getting say 12.7 in 5 with 12.3 in 1 and 2, which would average out to 12.5 on the gauge. Just my opinion, though.

Post some pics too!

I should have enough money to buy this kit in February. I've been dying to find a PDF of the install manual.

How does this kit affect the power steering cooler? Will I be able to upgrade to the Nismo cooler?

The HKS auxillary fuel injection system works well with the air distribution of the stock plenum. The two auxillary injectors sit inside the intake manifold and are aimed rearward at 45 degree angles towards the the two rearmost intake runners which are the leanest. The A/F starts at near 13 at low rpm and falls to 12 at higher rpm. I'll get pics up this weekend. Don't have a scanner to post the actual dyno graph. Smooth, completely linear climb in hp to 5600 rpm, then slow drop off. Torque climbs at about a 45 degree angle from just off idle to 4600 rpm, but drops *almost* as quickly after that. Looks basically like a rounded mountain peak.

Install is fairly straightforward relative to FI kits in general. Fuel system is the most complex part of it all. Instructions are very complete, but are poorly organized. The manual tends to jump around a lot from one thing to another. FCON inerface is fully harnessed. Completely plug-and-play.

Box is not tunable, but as you know, it is a conservative kit in terms of it's overall power. In it's current state, it is a completely tuned system to go with the stock engine, plenum, headers, cats.
