Default vortech owners, belt question

i've had my kit on for 2700 miles and two days ago my belt was ripping in half (the belt with the teeth). have any of you had a problem with your belts and do you guys think the belt was to loose? i never checked the belt before, everything looked good.

Check your belt alignment and tension on the pulleys. Mounted correctly, it should run very close to the edge of one pulley (I don't remember which at the moment). If it is running over the edge (even by a very small amount), you may get premature wear. It only takes a very small amount to get started. From there, the belt will start to fray and separate. Once it does, all you can do is replace it.

how can i fix it, to make sure this doesn't happen again? do the belt have to be tight or real tight? if the belt is hitting the tensioner is that bad or just if the belt is running over the edge?
thanks for the reply

Was your belt squealing at all before you noticed this? If not, then it could be a pulley alignment problem. However, if belt had been squealing, then it is possible that it became too loose and became misaligned. If you are using the stock Vortech belt, you should check & tighten it frequently. There should be no squealing of the belts when running. As soon as my belt starts squealing at start-up I know it is time to tighten again (but do not overtighten!). Many of us have experienced this.

I believe there are aftermarket belts out there that resist stretching but I do not recall who makes them.

I think he's talking about the cog belt, not the serpentine.

But yeah, if that cog isn't in the exact right spot, and end up slipping off the edge a little bit, that will end up destroying it. Mine's the same as mcduck's, located close to the edge, just a little bit of the pulley showing outside the belt. I check it frequently, mostly out of paranoia because some people have had that nut come loose on them.

Sorry, I didn't equate "belt with teeth" with cog belt (I thought it was the ribbed serpentine!). I think you are right now that I read it again. Nevermind!

Ive always checked my belts at least once a week .Your cog belt needs to be lined up then tightened . You should have some play in it [ 1/2 inch both ways ] and be able to [with some effort ] turn the tentioner pulley with your hand . Your Serp pulley should be hard to turn to a 90 degree angle . Checking belts and bolts and vacuum hoses should become a weekly habit fofr you....Bill
