g35 5A vs 6MT
i'm sure this question has been asked many times but i dont wanna get flamed.. even a one sentence reply would b fine.. so here it is.... how much faster is the 6MT than the 5A? the 5A is supposed to shift pretty fast, but how much 1/4 mile time does it sacrifice to get the automatic tranny convenience? any owners out there with a 5A that has driven in a 6Mt? how big of a difference is there? thanks everyone

the difference is not as much as you think. 6MT quarter mile times are close to 14.2 on a good day... I've heard of stock 5ATs hit 14.4 using MM. 5AT's in auto mode will push 14.5 - 14.6 on a good day.
Average 6MT speeds = 14.3 - 14.4
Average 5AT speeds in MM = 14.4 - 14.5
Could very well be a drivers race though.

For what it's worth, I've personally run a 14.055 in an AT with a Borla exhaust as the only mod, but that comes with the disclaimer that it was 32 degrees out at the time (nature's own performance mod). If you're only concerned about straight line acceleration, the AT is definitely competitive. In twisties, however, you'd need alot of practice over the same stretch of road to figure out when to shift, because it doesn't shift quickly enough to wait until you instinctually feel the need to shift. You need to be a second ahead in the turn intellectually. That's its biggest drawback, performance wise. Plus it's just not as fun.

Bone stock at our little crappy track i hit 14.4 @ 97mph
Not to shabby, that was shifting myself, leaving it in auto netted me constant 14.6's@95!!! I was very sad at the loss of 2mph in normal auto mode.

Hmm I didnt know my auto Z is that much quicker then a G35 coupe auto. Yeah manual mode is .2 sec quicker then full auto. Recently i raced a 6sp Z with CAI. He had the 1st jump(half car). We stayed there 100+! He was really good with the shifts.

That is very interesting .. JonsilvZ .... a real head scratcher for me.
The redline is 6500 and with the factory ECU, you will hit the cut-off before hitting 6900 rpm. Even before you hit 6500 redline, the butterfly in the throttle-body starts to shut and by the time you hit 6500 it is lights out for real ... unless you have the ECU flashed (My red line is 7100 now and the butterfly stays open to the 7100 redline). I am wondering if the ECU redline in MM mode is truly set at 6900 instead of 6500 ... and if that is true, then the butterfly shut-down may also have been delayed to accomodate the driver's command. If someone finds this out, I sure like to know too. -- GQ35 with a 6mt.
