I don't want to go overboard but want to add some better than factory performance to the G. What are the must do mods?

It all depends on how much money you want to spend and how intensive you want to go. I'll tell you this...modding is addictive. Once you get something, you'll want more & more.

I would say must haves for someone that just wants to spend a little bit of money:

1. JWT Popcharger
2. Crawford/Kinetix plenum
3. RT high flow cats
4. Y-pipe

I agree with Moog. But don't forget about the Z tube off of the 350z. Assuming you were to buy all the above, I would say that you are looking at spending around $1500-1600 before install.

screw the popcharger. the gains are minimal. go with the z-tube, plenum, high-flow cats or test pipes, pulleys, and a y-pipe if you have money left over. then again... for the cost of a y-pipe, you can buy a borla for a few hundred more, i'd rather get that and dump the y-pipe altogether.

borla - 700
plenum - 400
high flow cats/testpipes - 500/200
pulleys - 200
z-tube - 50-60

Default Try THIS!

Yeah, why spend under $100.00 for the JWT Popcharger for 5-6rwhp (see JWT's website), when you can spend $700.00 for 5-6rwhp and get the Borla Exhaust instead???

That has to be one of the funniest responses I've read in a while. Thanks for that one.

My thoughts...
1. Z-Tube & JWT Popcharger
2. RT high flow cats
3. Crawford Plenum V5
4. JIC Y-Pipe
5. UR underdrive pulley (singular) and belts

Prices I've paid are...
1. $180 + ~$10.00 shipping
2. $500.00 + ~$14.00 shipping
3. $415 (includes $20.00 for black powdercoat) + ~$15.00 shipping
4. $420 (includes shipping)
5. $230 (includes shipping)

Total = $1784.00 for an estimated (30-35 rwhp). Cheapest way to get there if you ask me...

Oh yeah, that 30-35 rwhp translates into 35-40bhp (measured at the crank, assuming a 16-17% loss through the system).

So for under $1800 you can have a 320hp G35C-6MT, and only ~$50.00/hp, not too bad if you ask me.

You got any dyno runs to prove this 30 hp you speak of? I would be interested in seeing this.

neffster - Did you install these yourself or did you pay someone else? I want to gauge install prices.

To answer your question honestly, NO, I personally do not YET have this info, but others have done combinations of these mods and have dynoed very similar numbers to those that I've quoted. Have you read the gospil of Eagle1? I'm planing on getting together an Orlando Dyno day (since other board members have said they would, but never did). I've been busy planning trips to the local drag strip (tomorrow night, Friday) and trying to get the local G35 guys together for Z-Fest (the following day, Saturday). The dyno day will come soon enough I promise. Check out Fresh Alloy for the results of the dynos within a month or so. I would have put something together already, but the JIC Y-Pipe has been on the way from Japan for over 1 month. I'm expecting it the first week of May. I'm also just getting around, financially, to ordering the pulley and belts.

I installed the plenum, the Z-Tube and JWT Popcharger. I worked out a deal with a local NAPA automotive store to install the RT Cats. I paid $34.75 for 30 minutes of work (really 45 minutes) but I promised to let them install the JIC Y-Pipe when it comes in and agreed to pay another $34.75 for this install (even though it should only take about 10-15 minutes on the Y-Pipe). The guys are really into cars and modifications, and I really HATE using the "concrete pillow" when performing mods under the car. The underdrive pulley I "might" try myself, but I've heard that you need to torque the pulley to 200lb.ft. and I don't have a torque wrench that goes that high, plus my breaker bar probably isn't long enough and I don't have any hollow steel tubes laying around the garage for the extra mechanical advantage... Well you just talked me into paying for the pulley install.

And for those who are interested...

Crawford Plenum: (hit print preview and increase the magnification to 100% to read the rear wheel torque and horsepower numbers) 11hp & 6lb.ft.
CrawfordZ

JWT Popcharger: 6.5hp
JWT POP CHARGER

Unorthodox Racing (UR) Ultra S Underdrive Crank Pulley: 10-12hp & 4-8lb.ft.
UR CRANK PULLEY

Random Technology (RT) High Flow Cats: 7-12hp
RT CATS

JIC Y-Pipe: 5-8hp & 2-4lb.ft
I don’t have a link for this, but I have e-mail straight from JIC with their claims on the Y-Pipe…

Todd,
That would be around 5-8 hp with 2-4 lbft torque gain.
Regards,
Ben

So, if you were to add up the minimum gains of each mod (which in all likelyhood MIGHT BE PUSHING what you would actually get if you combined the following mods to the G35) you'd end up with about 38.5rwhp which would equate to ~45bhp.

So saying that 30rwhp is out of the question really doesn't make much sense, especially since these mods HELP EACH OTHER.

The intake helps provide air into the "better" plenum. The plenum forces air through the headers much more efficiently. The RT Cats allow air to flow in greater volume and the JIC Y-Pipe helps the additional air to "Not get bottle necked". The pulley is lighter and allows the engine to more efficiently deliver power to the rear wheels by dropping INERTIA (md^2).

To those of you who are reading this thread, please do not go and add up the MAXUMUM rear wheel horse power to these mods and think you'll get anywhere close to this.

Also, don't go messing with any E46 M3's. They might only have 333bhp but they rev like a monster to 7900 rpm's and can hit 60 in second gear. They'll still put a hurting on a G35 with the mods listed above.

Hope you enjoyed the reading and links, and don't forget the disclaimer... "Your mileage may vary".

I still think even with those mods, you'll get about 20 horses if you are lucky.

Where?
Crank or wheels?
Have you installed the Crawford Plenum V5 yet?

If not, do so and then get back with me. I spoke with Doug yesterday and he is backlogged 22 plenums due to their recent popularity mainly because of the VERY REAL CLAIM of 11rwhp! I promise to try to dig up this thread in a month or so and post a dyno. If I'm wrong then I'll gladly admit it, but I can honestly say that with the RT Cats, intake and plenum I really believe I'm already at the 20bhp (crank) mark. EASILY!

FYI, what mods do you have 350xfire? Do you even own a G35? I'm new here so forgive me if I'm asking dumb questions.

G35- Greddy EVO and Injen, ordered DC headers and Crawford high flows. So yes, I have a G35. I have also been messing around with cars for enough time to know that 40 horses are pretty hard to come by. I'll dyno once I get my stuff + the plenum and we'll see. My guess is still 20. I will gladly admit that I'm wrong as well. BTW, I hope we get 40, I just don't see it happening.

350xfire,

Please let me know what you think of the headers. I've heard mixed reviews about them. I really don't want to drop over a grand (including installation) for a mod that doesn't produce at least 1 rwhp per $100.00.

Have you done a baseline dyno to do an overall comparison? I decided against it, since I live in Florida and would have too much of a span time between installing my mods and doing the second dyno. I would have had to have done my first dyno in January, with 45 degree temps., no humidity, and a new car. By the time I'm finished with my mods it will be the beginning of June, 100 degree temps, relative humidity of 100% with a dewpoint making seem higher. The comparison would not have made sense for me.

Medik13,

Even if 350xfire is right, spending under $2000.00 for 20 rwhp isn't too bad, and if I'm right then we'll all be much happier.

My dyno so far with Greddy EVO and Injen = 215 hp and 212 lbft torque. If you calculate based on 20% loss it equals 260 at the motor.
My car made 1 horse less than a Borla dual exhaust, JWT Pop charger equipped car, but made about 3 lbft torque more.

So, so far I have not gained much at all. Sounds good, though.

I hoe the headers, high flow cats and plenum do better. If not, this is going to SUCK!

So, I'll stick to my 20 at the wheels!

Do you have an automatic? People usually use 20% for paracitic losses with the automatic and 15-17% for the manual. Also the 6MT's that I've seen dynoed, usually have a little better response from NA mods than the automatics (for what that's worth).

Also, are you the proud owner of a sedan? I'd expect to see more hp/torque from a coupe... thanks for sharing...
