Question cleaning an intercooler?

I had seen in a post that oil inside the intercooler can reduce the efficiency. I took the lower pipe off mine for a day and had a nice puddle of oil on the driveway.

My question is, are there any good instructions / considerations when cleaning an intercooler of oil? How about the piping? Is rusting an issue? What not to use (gasoline / brake cleaner) ?

Thanks.

It's aluminum so it is not going to rust. I would think that soap and water would work.
