well if your cat is nice and shiny, then they could tell that its not stock as most oem cats are covered in heat shielding of some sort.

Lets say i am interested in the Injen SES Straight Tip Exhaust, is that legal in CA?

Yeah, the SES is legal for CARB, the new straight tip is also quiet enough to be under 95db limit.

Thats what I have on my car and I am a stickler about trying to stay legal while I mod my car.

Not that it matters in this case, but I'm not sure it's CARB (California Air Resource Board) that regulates anything after the cats. I believe that's just a state law. I'm not sure, though. (And I guess it really doesn't matter, since a law is a law no matter which part of the government passed it.)

You are right CARB does not care about the exhaust after the cats, the legality of cat back exhaust falls to State regulation and police enforcmnt.
