Dyno: crawford plenum vs motordyne spacer
On 3/26/5, 1/2hr after driving 1.5hrs from san diego to huntington beach group pull, i dyno'd my z with crawford cast plenum. Then, hydrazine asked me if i would donate my z to dyno his 1/2" motordyne spacer. After 2 hrs rest, i redyno'd using his spacer and a stock plenum. The results are below. I would like some dyno experts to comment on it. I chose to display the best pull of each variable. It is sae-corrected.

i did 3 pulls with the crawford plenum and then 3 pulls with spacer and stock plenum.

my only reservation is that another guy dyno'd twice, resting about 2 hours btwn series of pulls like i did, and his numbers went way up the second time as well, even more than mine. i think it was flz, but i'm not sure. it was someone with a yellow 05, i believe.

my "baseline", 8/04, with a popcharger and pulley, was 244 uncorrected, iirc.
if you look at the a/f, i was running way lean on 3/26/5. my mods on that day: crawfrd plenum, headers and hfc, unlimited ypipe. so basically, i showed no gain with all those mods i added after my baseline, which has been attributed to high a/f. needless to say, i ran to ts shortly after the 3/26 pull, but i haven't redynod since going to ts.

i see.. I have the popcharger sitting on my desk and the 1/4" motordyne spacer arriving tomorrow to install. I wonder if any of it actually increases significant HP. Hope all of this it not for nothing.

that's a very good question. na buck/bang is very expensive. you have to go all the way or not at all to get any real performance changes cuz the ecu wants to make your car run economically, which is the exact opposite of performance. the other option is fi, which has reliability issues. part of the reason i do mods is cuz i like to make my car unique and learn how to install this stuff (and i don't have a wife or gf to spend my money and time on).
MY experience, dyno-proven, with the popcharger, is that ON MY Z it actually decreased the power. I removed the pulley cuz of the harmonics controversy.
the best but most costly way to see if your mods are doing anything is to get a baseline dyno with no mods, then add one mod and redyno ON THE SAME DYNO. several mos later, redyno to see what ecu did. if you hold your gains, add a mod and redyno, etc, etc. Once you get bitten by the mod bug, it becomes like an addiction. you can't stop. fortunately, i can afford my addiction. can you? did you see that dateline special where the guy was making big bux but was still living in an apt and was deeply in debt cuz of his freakin mod addiction? that's why i ask the question.
if i were able to do it over again, i'd prolly pick a cheaper and less frustrating hobby. as it is, my nismo cams/clutch/fw are being installd right now, then its back to ts.
they say insanity is doing the same thing over and over, each time expecting different results. i know insanity.

Z boy, thanks for taking the time to do this. This is somewhat startling to me, but how much could you attribute the 'down time' to the dyno gains?
Motordyne time and time again outperforms the crawford unit (based on independent as well as his own testing). As a current Crawford Plenum owner, I'm not sure what to think b/c I havent installed mine yet. Also, doesnt the Z's ecu adjust itself after every WOT run? Basically giving you more power the longer you are on the dyno?
