I got some Thermotec Aluminized self-adhesive heat shielding today. I wrapped the heatshield box to my intake on all sides to try and reduce the heat that the metal box absorbs.

The product I bought is supposed to deflect 90% of radiant heat up to 2000 deg. My before and after measurements show no difference to the inside temp of the box.

Maybe it helps while the car is moving????????????

Oh well, it was only a $17 investment.

 

metal is just going to get hot anyway from ambient temps

that's why i used the thermopadding material (not normal reflective thermowrap) on the inside of it. I really don't like metal anything for intake parts

 

Plastic is your best friend

Zinmiami, you efforts haven't gone to waste. IMO, the tape will help a little, especially in extreme conditions, ie TRACK.

i'm still not so sure the tape will help all that much on metal unless you are able to cover every square inch of the exterior of the metal to keep it from contacting the air in the engine bay. Metal transfers heat really well and if the metal - especially aluminum is able to pick up some heat, it's going to travel along itself and heat the whole box up.

The tape in that case might prevent any real huge bursts of hot air directly contacting the metal, but it's still going to heat up and that heat is going to transfer to the intake air unless it has something to insulate it.

Imagine being trapped in a metal box out in the desert. Then put some of the thermo tape/wrap on the outside of the metal. It's still going to burn your skin if you touch it for a long time.

You need some sort of insulation to keep the heat from the metal blowing into the intake

 

Its not the tape per say. Its the a material from Thermotec that comes in 12" X 24" sheets. So I traced out the shape of each side of the box, cut the pieces to fit and applied the material. I then cut strips to overlap the seams. The outside of the box is completely covered. The edges have a weatherstrip like material applied that came with the intake that forms the seal against the hood.

Bottom line is that these boxes need to be made of something other than metal to help with the heat issue. Metal suffers from excessive heat soak in this type of application.
