just curious about wrapping the cats or exhaust - the Y pipe section for instance and if it's worth it or not?

I've thought about wrapping my headers, but I guess headers that are heat wrapped will eventually get destoryed from the severe heat.

so what about the cats and Y pipe?

will it do pretty mucn nothing or be worth it?

 

I saw the wrap the other day and thought about it also. I get a pretty good amount of cabin heat from the HFC and the Y pipe i have. No heat shields on the y-pipe makes it hot inside.

 

excess heat could potentially cause the catalyst material to break down faster, could cause the metal to deteriorate faster... Could gain HP by keeping the exhaust hot it moves faster with more energy, Keep cabin temps down by not radiating heat...

Lots of pros, lots of Cons...

Do what you want to do bottom line...

 

yea my test pipes heat my cabin by the knees to the point that it feels like the sun is beating on the carpet when i touch it...

i think i'll keep the pipes normal until next summer...it might actually help my transmission fluid get warmer during the winter.

what's the best *obviously jethot is* but wrapwise?? thermo-tec? others?

 

I saw some Thermotec stuff that you can use to attach to the underbody in the affected areas. It reflects radiant heat away from the body. Using this you don't have to wrap the heat producing items you shield the car from their heat instead.

I wrapped all my turbo piping with Thermo-Tec black graphite heat wrap this past week. I also had my manifolds jet hot coated. The underhood temps dropped drastically and it no longer feels like I'm sticking my head in the oven when I open the hood. Feeling under my hood now, the side where the turbo is mounted barely feels any warmer than the rest of the engine bay.

I'd suggest getting your headers coated with a high temp coating like Jet-hot. I would not want to wrap cats as I'm afraid it would do more damage in the long run. And as stated, it would improve exhaust flow ever so slightly, but on an NA car I'm not sure if it's even worth the time invested.
