Default the mod that is WORTH the $$$...

well, first of all let me tip my hat off to all of you guys on this forum! the input you all communicate is really helpful...so everyone pat themselves on the back!

ok so now for the reason of this thread. after extensive research, and countless searches (especially on this forum) i decided to go with the Motordyne 5/16" plenum spacer w/ISO thermal gasket and copper TB heater. my honest opinion on this product is two thumbs up. definitely feel the difference mid-range and feel the rpm climbing a lot faster and the of course obvious, the sound, NICE! this product is worth every penny spent. not to mention how easy the installation process is, the manual is very detailed oriented and quite helpful along with the company itself.
so to anyone who is weighing their options on the plenum issue, i personally vouch for this product and the company behind it.
special thanks to Tony and Mariella at MotorDyne!!

I completely agree with you... can't speak for that brand but I have heard good reviews for it. IMO all plenum spacers are well worth the money

Is the extra gasket really needed?

What exactly does the iso do over the basic 5/16 spacer? The website claims the same power gains for both versions, yet the iso supposedly runs cooler. I don't see any temp comparisons on the site, so I wonder if it's really worth the extra money.

I installed the 5/16" spacer and the 2 ISO thermal gaskets. My plenum is still quite hot to the touch. I have heard of others who are able to open the hood and place their hand on top of plenum....my hand would cook on mine. I don't know why. Install went smooth. Performance/sound is great. Oh well I guess. I just got one HOT engine.

I think I know the reason. I saw that you have a pop charger in your sig. Pop Chargers have a tendancy to draw in air from the engine compartment.

The Iso Thermal can only work as good as the temperature of the air flowing into the intake. Just as a test, you could put your stock air intake on and take note of the difference in your plenum temperature.

It will make a big difference. Your plenum will run much cooler.

That seems like a logical explanation and is probrably the reason why. I do have a Varis duct with a tube running from duct to popcharger though. That air is definitely cold. I have felt the popcharger after driving and it is cool to the touch.

So the same is true for the vortech systems where the intake is exposed and in the engine bay?

Yes. If at all possible, try to duct the intake filter at some point ahead of the radiator so it can ingest fresh, cool air. Use boost hose if you have to.

Relocating the air filter out of the engine bay will boost your performance and reduce the tendancy for ping.

I am really interested in the Motordyne spacer --- but I don't see this in the instructions where it is needed. Why ??

Per the Nissan Performance site ...

NOTE: Extra upper plenum gaskets are recomended, (a total of two). One upper plenum gasket will need to have the center cut out, to match the spacer. Please select below for extra gaskets.

Available Options:
Plenum Gasket Pair 14033AM600x2: (+$25.50)

Can somebody explain this ?

He may be referring to the extra Iso Thermal gasket that has been included in some of the 350Z kits.

Installation of the extra gasket was optional. It provides a little more thermal isolation but it also raises the plenum an additional 1/16". In some cases it made for a tight fit under the strut bar but in most it was fine. The extra gasket is essentially a way of finding our how much room (on average) is available under the strut bar.

Because the strut bar clearance varies so much from vehicle to vehicle, the objective was to get a large statistical sample of the fleet on how much room is available under the strut bar.

Tony .. Merry Xmas, by the way .. and thanks for your expedited response ...

1/ So what you are saying is that this gasket is not needed .. or should be tried to see if it fits and provide the extra thermal protection ?

2/ The battery is reversed in the JDM models .. and the wiring is different ..
Any problems ?

Thanks for your post.

I just ordered the 5/16" Basic Plenum spacer from http://www.motordyneengineering.com/350Z.asp: $212 shipped. Independent tests show +4.95 pounds of torque throughout RPM range. That's $42.82/1 pound of torque.
