Default K&N filter problem

While installing a k&n filter on my 06 Z the filter kept slipping out of the plastic part that goes around it. It fit into the plastic peice but isn't as stiff as the stock filter. B/c it was slipping out i had trouble getting it into the filter housing. I finally worked it in but wonder if the filter came out of the plastic peice. I checked the number on the filter and it is correct. Anyone else had this problem?

i have the replacement filter as well. It is a bit looser than stock, its just tricky keeping it in place while you replace that part of the airbox. I just did mine quickly. I also questioned the fitment, but the box will not close properly if it wasnt sitting right. You should be fine. If you are that paranoid... you can always silicone(it peels away if needed) it to the box and then put it back together but I dont think u need to get that extreme buddy...

I had the exact opposite problem with mine... mine fit VERY snug... I thought it wasn't going to fit at first but in the end it worked out just fine.

Edit... my bad... I was talking about when actually putting the holder & the filter into place.... it's a lot more snug than stock which worried me at first but it seals up nicely.

My filter just lays onto the holder like you are describing, I don't recall the stock filter being any different in that respect (could be wrong, it's been a while). I just lay the filter on the plastic holder, and hold it in place with my index fingers/thumbs and drop it right in. Once it's in there I push it down a bit further to get it in place. You can look in the crack to see that it's seated properly just to give you some reassurance.

Off subject, do you notice any improvement with this filter installed?

I did. I would roughly estimate 3hp or so. Not huge but noticable. The main things are the engine runs smoother and the throttle response is crisper.

I have the drop-in filter (PN#33-2031-2). No problems installing but I have an '05. Idk if there is a difference in the air filter boxes. Some pics might be helpful.

I don't know that there is any appreciable difference in performance either, except it makes me feel better knowing there is a K&N filter in there

05-06 air boxes are the same, both have a velocity stack.

I have an 06 and isntalled the K&N drop in PN#33-2031-2 and it fit like the OEM. If anything it was stiffer and fit better. It sounds like you may have a different part#?

Let us know what you find.

Isn't the stock a really thin Filter to begin with?

The stock filter is paper and it's definitely more restrictive than the K&N....

the oem filter is like trying to breathe through a coffee straw...
