What do you think of this Jet-Hot Coated Plenum?

Default What do you think of this Jet-Hot Coated Plenum?

Hello everybody, hoping to get some feedback on this OEM plenum we polished and then sent to Jet-Hot for their Sterling 1300 Coating. The coating shines almost as well as a good polish and reduces operating temps of headers so we are trying it to see if it reduces the operating temps of the plenum. So far we've used it at an AutoCross last Saturday and we will run it at ButtonWillow this Saturday.

1st pic shows the plenum after we polish it before sending it to Jet-Hot, next to a stock plenum. The Jet-Hot coating will not fill in the pores of the stock cast aluminum to produce a smooth finish so we spent a few hours of sanding and polishing to smooth it out.

2nd pic shows the inlet area where we sanded down the casting marks, thought maybe we could increase the airflow some.

3rd pic shows the plenum back from Jet-Hot next to a stock plenum.

4th pic shows the plenum next to a Maya DTM chrome wheel to compare the finish.

5th pic is the Jet-Hot coated plenum installed with a K&N Typhoon polished intake to compare those finishes.

looks really good. Are you going to install a temp sensor in the plenum to measure temps?

Not sure yet, so far seems a little cooler to the touch after run hard.

That's a good idea, I was actually looking at buying one of those thermometers that reads temps with a infrared beam. To know for sure if their is definitely a benefit of reducing temps we need to do a day of testing at the track with this Jet-Hot Plenum compared to stock one.

The majority of the heat transferred to the plenum comes from the block itself, and this heat is dissipated via heat transfer to the ambient air in the engine bay. I don't understand how this would reduce plenum and intake temps as what you're doing is keeping the heat inside the plenum.

This is why they use this type of coating on exhaust components. On the exhaust and turbine side of a turbocharger, superheated air is actually more fluid which assists in exhaust flow. It also keeps this heat out of the engine bay.

I understand your point completely. To reduce intake temp, It's better to go with the Methanol Injection, that' way, you'll have more realistic gain than this.

Jet-Hot is supposed to do more than just insulate, it is also supposed to have good emissivity/radiation abilities. I know, how can it do two things at once? Well I'm not sure how exactly, would have to get more info from Jet-Hot on that specifically but, coated parts are supposed to retain less heat and run cooler both inside and out.

I'm just experimenting, trying something different, give me a little credit. If it makes the plenum run a little cooler great if not, well at least it looks good and is basically maintenance free as it is very easy to clean, no polishing.

With that said, I just returned from ButtonWillow where I ran in there Performance Driving Clinic. Great fun, lots of track time and very good instructors. After a good 20 minute session, this plenum was mighty hot to the touch, (probably didn’t help that it was over 100 degrees out there today) not the most technical way to test but it definitely was not cool. Would still like to get out there and compare a stock vs. this Jet-Hot one with a thermometer to see if there is any difference in temp.
