I have teestpipes and my "Service engine soon" light is on. I'm wondering, if I can get the "Service engine soon" light OFF (aka Check engine light off), by one of these, "dissconnect battery, pump throttle", etc. methods, can the code still be seen by the NY inspector when I go for my inspection? I don't care whether the light is on or off, I just need it to pass inpection when they plug into my OBD port! Help!

i believ it will still keep the pending codes/stored codes. try to find someone with a scan tool and have them clear the codes complety.

No, you probaby won't pass if you reset the ECU to clear a code. When a code has been cleared or the ECU reset, it goes into a "not ready" mode that the inspectors will be able to detect. Once the car completes a "drive cycle" the ECU switches off the "not ready" state and you get a clean reading. If the cause of the original fault still exists, the CEL light will come back on.

lets say i put my test pipes on, throw a code, remove the code with a scan tool or simply take off the cats,,,,,,will it still end up in my stored data that i once removed a code?......i dontknow illinois air team people are some basturrds.

or will they still read this code? Do I need to get this code cleared with a scanner in order to pass emissions?

If your state is one that does a visual inspection, then you could be screwed if you have test pipes or HFCs. Non-foulers may let you pass the OBD check, but it's not going to help you with the visual part.

No visual, they just pull it in the garage and never lift it. I turned off the light by holding down the odometer button, am I smooth sailing yet?

The o2 non fouler fix will eliminate the SES light for the test pipe mod but will not pass a sniffer/emissions test.

350drft, the answer to your question is if you clear the CEL, you have cleared the code. Pending codes do not turn on the CEL, and they can be read with an OBD2 reader. Get a reader, learn how to use it, and you will know when something is pending, and can clear it just prior to inspection.

See post #3, clearing the codes puts the OBD in a not-ready state. I can't speak for every other state, but ours uses the EPA standards which I assume other states also use.

If the OBD shows not-ready, then the car gets rejected and has to come back for a retest. The car must undergo a normal drive cycle which involves a certain amount of run time at varying speeds and distances - i.e. normal use. The reason for that is to keep people from stopping at Autozone and clearing the code then going directly to the test station and hopefully passing. That works as good as disabling the CEL light on the dash.

One of my family members works for the state environmental quality department responsible for this program of emission testing. I get to hear all the rules and regs and of course, all the tricks people try to play to get past the inspection.

So how long do I have to drive to undergo a normal driving cycle? If I can drive for about 50 miles without the check engine light coming on, am I safe to go get my emmisions test?

I don't have access to an electronic copy of the Nissan OBDII Drive Cycle, only a paper copy. It's a pretty involved process of stops and starts, driving for various periods at different speeds. Basically it simulates normal driving conditions. I would guess that a week of normal driving would give it time to go ready.

Moooooo! Several states, including Maryland, just check OBD2 on newer cars. Mine passed w/ no evap canister and tp - just O2 simulators.
