Has anyone done this...or seen this? I am hoping that it will help the air temp coming into the intake. Anyone know if this will even help? My next step after that is to "conceal" it with a black or silver mesh grille insert.
Any opinions on this?
You want to make a real difference, get rid of the "heat shield" and fully conceal the JWT popcharger. The air inlet/hole in the frame will allow for enough cool air to enter. I think the days of shoving air into your motor "ram-air" style are over...
I noticed my buddies Stillen CAI was not very well concealed either. We put our cars side by side and revved both of them. I could feel an immense vacuum on my hand when placed over the inlet once he revved my motor. Then we did the same with his motor and I felt half, maybe even less of a vacuum. At first I thought there was something wrong and then I felt around the sides of Stillen's shield, I noticed a large hole at the bottom. He revved and I could feel the vacuum there. So basically he's taking in a lot of engine heat once the hoods shut.

I thought of tubes and pipes and raming air into the system, but after seeing the amount of air taken into the motor all by itself, I couldn't imagine it needing any help. The only thing I think the Varis is good for is a direct shot of ambient air. I personally think its benefit/function doesn't justify its looks in the end.

I basically created my own shield and filter coupling. It's worked great for a year and half now...

^^^ it sure is... but that's besides the point, it makes for cheap, sturdy, accessible plastic to the average person. It's easy to drill, rivet, form/ deform with a heat gun and easy to cut and shape with a utility knife. I may sell this setup soon, as a one-off in the classifieds. IMO, it's better than the JWT popcharger and Stillen short ram CAI. It's also a lot easier to dissasemble and clean compared to the the Stillen which looks like a pita!

I'm starting another CAI project with the Fujita intake soon...

No... there is no point. When I say I'm going to sell this setup, I mean this one and only setup. The filter is basically the same as JWTs and unlike Stillen's, which has a closed cap. When I say it's better, I mean better at keeping out the heat. It's a closed container, like OEM, not just a heat shield...

I just ordered one.

I'm currently running a Popcharger with bolt-ons and have been thinking about switching to one of these with a K&N or Nismo filter. Anyone have any thoughts on that setup? Mods are basic, 5/16 MD spacer, crank pulley, exhaust.

I've thought about doing what you did myself in the past, but my thought was that if I completely shroud the popcharger, then I'd essentially be reducing the setup back down to the way it was with the stock airbox. In other words, I'd have an enclosed box/contraption hooked up to the inlet again, with the only difference being a cone filter instead of a panel filter. You mentioned that you could feel more vacuum when putting your hand over the inlet with this enclosure. But I would think that the increased vacuum is due simply to the fact that you've cut off all other avenues of acquiring air. So this is what I'm wondering. Yes, the air you'd be getting in would be cooler as it's having to be drawn in through the inlet. But would the volume of available air be less? And if so, would the decreased volume negate any benefits from the lower temp? Thoughts?

semtex,

You make a good point and I wish I had the instruments (air-flow-sensor with temp-guage) to test my setup.
To answer your questions, I would have to bet on my theory… I believe the inlet is large enough to adequately supply the stock 3” intake tube with fresh cool air. The other route (semi-open filter JWT) must ingest some hot air, but it too mixes with ambient air once a vacuum starts and the car is rolling. In the end, I would bet that the sealed box is slightly better…

To zodiac, this intake tube you speak of (once moving along at 40+) could equalize the air pressure right at the inlet, canceling the vacuum, less work for the motor. The question, would this vacuum less void improve air intake... maybe? The Varis duct would have the same effect.

But I still don't believe you can naturally "ram-air" down the intake tube faster than the n/a engine ingests it... And this is why I only took the approach of trying to reduce the restriction just before the MAF tube. My next step, lol, apply this same approach to my Fujita intake which eliminates the MAF.
