thanks for the opinions guys... looks like i am getting mixed answers, but a lot of help. i will extend my research further, but more suggestions and experiences will always help me out.

Keep in mind all -

A 2.5" system, a well built one at least, should be good for 500-550HP. If you go outragous turbo and motor build - you MAY need to go to 3" for full performance gains.
