.
Under Federal EPA regulation, replacement of original catalytic converters is allowed only if the original converter(s) is missing, or the vehicle has more than 50,000 miles or is at least five years old and the need for a replacement has been established and documented, or a local inspection program has determined the existing converter is in need of replacement.
with that being said, Random Technology are the only CARB approved catalytic convertors

Independent testing by engine builders, racers, and automotive magazines has repeatedly proven the superiority of the Random Technology SuperStainless design. This design, which meets Federal EPA and California ARB requirements, enables virtually any vehicle with a properly tuned engine to meet emissions standards with little, if any power loss (compared to an exhaust with no catalytic converter). Please note that it is illegal to remove a properly functioning catalytic converter and that aftermarket catalytic converters are not legal for installation in California on OBD II vehicles (some 1994 & 1995, and all 1996 and later vehicles).

Seems like they meet CA CARB ( or ARB as they call it) but they are still illigal anyway.

WTF is a OBD II veichle?

Random Tech CATS are not the only Carb approved CATS....many and most of the HFC's out there use CATS with CARB numbers, which makes them CARB approved units for most of the country. The FI HFC's also have carb numbers on them, but that doesn't necessarily mean the Random's or FI's or any others for that fact, have been approved by CARB to be a unit that is approved.

Take DC Sport headers - they have been approved by CARB and carry a sticker and number. If you modify them, they are no longer approved as originally designed.

The same goes with a Vortech SC Kit. The base kit is approved, HOWEVER, if you change the pulley, make a custom CAI for it, etc....you will loose that CARB approval.

so are Kinetix cats illegal...?

based on the link up above... any cats that are not OEM are simply illegal..

BTW.. did you have any problems intalling the Kinetix cats.... it mentioned in that link, that there could be fitment problems... when combined with afermarket catbacks...?

So why are HFC's illigal in CA if they pass the sniff test and asuming they meet sound DB levels?

Never made sense if they pass the sniffer why are they sooooooooooooo/illigal bad to use.
I have been to SAE meeting once (Society of Autmotive Engineers), and this type of question was raised during the meeting. And personally I think the answer to your question is, CARB are full of politicians, and alot of them dont know what's going on regarding automobile. Actually lots of Automotive Engineers don't agree with them.

Sorry for revivng an old thread but I figure it's better to bump this one than to start another one and get yelled at for not searching.

Anyways, I'm wondering which cat people with Vortech SC's go with. My restrictive stock cats kept me from reaching 400whp so now I am looking to go with HFC's. Any suggestions??
