Default Missing Basic Knowledge About Exhaust

Hi guys,

I know this will be something meant to be known by everyone...
But i'm a newbie to the z, and to tuning in general...
My idea was tu put on my 06 z a new exhaust, as simple as possible:

just a "straight" pipe, with its silencer, nothing else... No cats, no double silencers (mine has 2, one smaller in the middle and one bigger at the end), ecc...

But i've heard some speaking of "back pressure", and this suggests that my ideal exhaust won't work properly, maybe because more air/gas would be needed (FI...?), and/or a flash...

So, what's needed to make it work correctly, giving a bit of hp gain?

(feel free to remove this post, if it's too "newby")

Thanx (i'm an italian guy, sry for my bad english)

Headers, test pipes and a catback exhaust system should do the job.

"Back pressure" has to do with mainting a proper pressure differential between your cylinders and exhaust. The cylinder charge (fuel-air mixture) will obviously be of extremely high pressure...you want the exhaust flow to maintain a correct level of low pressure to encourage the scavenging of the spent charge (exhaust gases) and the introduction of the fresh charge into the cylinder. High pressure is always looking for low pressure...that's where it will flow/escape to...all part of fluid mechanics. That's why breathing mods are important, especially when going FI. Having too little of back pressure can actually cause a loss of HP, as can too much.

There are a lot of very knowledgable guys on here who have both NA and FI setups. I think you'll be just fine with a couple hi-flo cats and a cat-back exhaust...that's what I'm rolling with. Keep in mind, if you eventually go FI, you might have to adjust your setup again. GL!!

(P.S. if you do get HFC's, make sure to get the metal substrate cats...better flow, more durable than ceramic)

Ok, cat-back already incoming! (CSC, an italian factory, ever heard about?)
Even if my idea was to get test pipes... but if it would mess up my setup then i won't get them...

Thank you mates!
