Default Should I get a Plenum spacer?

Hey all,

Just got a 2004 350z Enthusiast AT. I was reading the forum (Top 100 questions) to figure out if I should install a plenum spacer or not. I guess I have an MREV? but wasn't sure if I would get additional performance if I installed a plenum spacer? If yes, can somebody give me an idea of how much increase can be expected?

Last but not least, I still have the factory warranty on the engine and tranny...would installing a plenum spacer void the warranty?

Thanks in advance.

Ciao

just make sure it is properly installed. You might run into clearance issues with factory strut bar. Harda$$ dealers might void your warranty...you never know.

Now see if they'll void you (if the plenum spacer wasn't the cause of problem) when you present them with this ...

The Magnusson-Moss Warranty - Federal Trade Commission Improvement Act of 1975 protects consumers from such fradulent activity by new car dealers. Under this Act, aftermarket equipment that improves performance does not void a vehicle manufacturer's orginial warranty, unless the warranty clearly states the addition of aftermarket equipment automatically voids your vehicle's warrany or if it can be proven that the aftermarket device is the direct cause of the failure. The easiest way to check this is to look in your owner's manual under, "what is not covered". Under Magnusson-Moss Act a dealer must prove, not just vocalize, that aftermarket equipment caused the need for repairs before they can deny warranty coverage. If they cannot prove such claim-or offer an explanation- it is your legal right to demand compliance with the warranty. The Federal Trade Commission (202.326.3128) administers the Magnusson-Moss Act and monitors compliance with warranty law.

I just put my 5/16 spacer on last week and eventhough i didn't dyno it, it seemed to pull harder mostly in the upper rpm's. One thing i did notice though is that you can now put your hand on the plenum after the car has been running for awhile without burning yourself to death i could not even touch it before from such harsh heat. So my conclusion is that it works and is worth the money.

I installed the spacer and MREV2 lower intake....significant difference. But, it takes a bit longer than 10 minutes. Also, keep in mind you will need an INCH-pounds torque wrench, not a FOOT pounds torque wrench. I ended up buying one for $150 at Grainger since none of the local autoparts stores (i.e. O'Reillys, Autozone, Advanced Auto) had a inch-lb wrench that went low enough. If you take your time to ensure it / they is/are installed correctly, you are looking at 2-3 hours.

notice he has an 04...he doesnt have the REVUP engine....he doesnt need to worrya bout this..he will onyl gain like 5-7hp with the MREV2(made for revup engines but unlike older MREVS fits othe vq models) .

For the price and only that much gain is not worth it

i think the aam spacer i linked him will work better for him

You may want to review the Sport-Z magazine Plenum vs Plenum Spacer Shoot-Out.

At least you tried to do some research on your own, so I will try to answer your question:

1. you will gain about as much HP as you can see in my thread titled "Independent dyno testing of MREV v2 on ... " search for threads started by me to find it.

2. This will not void your warranty

For the dyno results of the "Sport Z Magazine Plenum Mod Shoot Out" see the link below.

http://motordyneengineering.com/dynos.asp

It was a fully independant and comprehensive test comparison of several plenum mods available on the market. And all of the plenum mods were tested on the same car under the exact same conditions.
Same car, Same day, Same dyno, Same gas, Same ECU resets before each set.

The MD 5/16" spacer produced the highest average gain and the most total area under the curve.
The MD 1/2" spacer produced the highest peak and second highest average gain.
The Crawford plenum produced the second highest peak and the third highest average gain.

Of all the different plots and analyses shown, this bar chart is probably the best (condensed) illustration of the different test results.

http://motordyneengineering.com/imag...tAnalysis5.gif

So to answer your question, yes, plenum spacers (and plenums) make power.

Let me know if you have any questions.
Tony

PS I also found in my own test comparisons of the MREV2 Vs the 5/16" spacer, the MREV2 produces even more TQ and a higher average HP (area under the curve) than the 5/16" spacer!

wow! this is the best forum ever! So many helpful replies so quick. Thanks a bunch for all the responses and guidance really appreciate it.

I think I am gonna get the spacer in the very near future...sounds like it is a good value for the price. I've learned last night that a friend of a friend had a Z and installed one too with good results.

Thanks again all! I can't wait to share before / after comparison.

Cheers
