Most power for the $$$$ Exhaust
The biggest two gains will be from removing the cats and removing that horrendous stock y-pipe. Removing the test pipes took a little torque away but I remember the day I installed them how great the car felt afterwards. I replaced my stock y-pipe today and holy smokes, it's an even bigger gain than I got from test pipes! It feels great.
BTW, I got my test pipes for $90 shipped and my y-pipe for $45 shipped. Both brand new. eBay can be your friend!
I'm having my car dyno'd in about a month (mid-December) at the same place where I can my car done stock. I can update you with a hp/$ figure... I'm sure it'll be huge compared to a cat-back that'll set you back a grand for maybe 5-10hp.

Im also in search for a louder than stock sound but still the same tone.
I have a 2004 and this thursday it will install an HR y pipe and replace the stock resonator with a magnaflow 12" striaight muffler and keep the stock muffler. I think still will make it a bit deeper and louder but the magnaflow will keep it rasp free. I already have a popcharger and a 5/16" plenum spacer , ill try and post a video after im done. If it needs to get louder Ill later install some HFC's

Well I got my Hr y pipe installed an my magnaflow muffler/resonator installed.
the car feels like it gained some mid to high rpm power and didnt give up any down low. from idle to 2500 rpms the exhaust is a tieny bit more quiet but when u get on it the exhaust opens up very nicely for still have the oem cats on it. overall I am extremely pleased with my results. I have some HFC's already but I think Im gonna wait to install them later since it will lose some of the VQ rumble.

I guess the most important thing to remember here regardless of what set up you go with is that piping size either stays the same all the way out or gradually gets larger. I know a few y pipes dump into 3inches and to put 2.5 or 2.75 whatever OEM is back on is only gonna hurt performance. I currenlty run the motordyne XYZ which dumps 3inches with OEM mid and muffler. I know thats gotta be hurting some horsepower...looking for a used nismo 3inches all the way out
I hear that dumping the 3" y to a smaller midpipe also creates the more raspy exhuast sound as well I was also thinking about maybe running an electric cutout right after the Y which could be a good solution for you as well, just uncap when youre gonna to race or drive spirited, and cap when u want less noise and better DD
You guys are ridiculous. If he would have started a new thread you would have gave him $hit for it and told him to search. The guy searched and you still get on his case about reviving an old thread. Don't post if you cant contribute, your wasting more time and space by being D-Bags than the reviver of this thread.
Anyway, this was a helpful thread. I also would like to keep the stock sound and gain power but I don't think its realistic. Looking more and more at Motordyne.

after breaking in the magnaflow muffler/resonator, the combo with hr ypipe
5/16"plenum spacer, jwt pop and stock muffler. the car seems stock at idle to 2500rpms, and is noticeably louder above 3000rpms, ud love it if u heard it.
