Default Nismo CAI gets better gas milage???

Ok, so I just bought a 2004 ZR and wanted to buy an intake. I was thinking about getting a pop charger because a friend of mine put it in his Z and likes it. It seems that everyone on this forums prefers it too because of cost and performance.

Since I don't have any patience I wanted to get an intake now. So I went to the local Nissan dealership and bought a Nismo Intake. After I installed it I took it out to see if it was a waste of money or not. I noticed that my mpg gage said I was getting something like 24.5 mpg in town rather then 18-19 I had been getting. Then I took it out on the highway and I got up to 28mpg. WTF???

Ok, so then I thought maybe my chip needed to be reset so I reset it using the pedal method found on this forum. Took it out on the highway again and boom 28mpg.

I have looked through this forum and saw a couple of threads of people claiming some high mpg with some intakes but no one seems to beleive them. I told a couple of my friends and they don't get it.

So... Could there be something not right with the chip picking up the new Nismo intake and throwing mpg off? Anyone else ever experienced this?

BTW - The nismo intake is a little louder but I can't tell much about a gain in hp.

You shouldnt experience any noticeable MPG increase with your intake, and as far as HP is concerned, you will need to open it up with a few more breathing mods before you can "feel" anything..at least in my opinion. I would let the MPG reset and see what happens.

Already reset it. I just filled up today so I'm going to do it manually with a little math. We'll see what happens. Not sure I am very sceptical as well but if it really does help with mpg then I am going to do it to my Murano as well.

Umm. Why don't you keep track of a few tanks of gas and see what it is really getting? i.e. 300 miles/10 gallons = 30 mpg. That's the sure way to see if your gauge is screwy.

Alright, so I tested my gas milage manually by calculating the MPGs. I have been driving in some crappy traffic and I still get better gas milage then when I had the stock intake but it did lower a bit while I was driving my normal style. But it did go up about 2-3 MPG in town. Before I was ranging between 18-19 and now I get on average 21.5 in town. I haven't had a chance to take a long trip yet so I don't know what the MPGs would be on the highway.

Was your old air filter like really, really dirty -- before you installed the Nismo CAI?

This might make me consider a nismo intake now.

Not at all. It looked brand new. I think the dealership might have put a new one in before I bought it.

And no it's not the cold weather because were I lived it didn't get cold until recently and I test drove the CAI with my top down.

There's no way to tell if you car will be the same with a CAI but I talked to another friend of mine that put a CAI on his Scion and he said he got better gas milage as long as he didn't drive it with a lead foot.

All I can tell you is everyone I know has put a pop charger on there Zs and they can't tell any difference at all so that's why I went with a CAI. The only reason I chose the Nismo brand is because I wanted it right then and didn't want to wait.

I have a friend that is a mechanic at a Benz dealership in Dallas so I plan on asking him about it next time I see him. He built a Colt with close to 500hp in it. The car sounds like it's going to blow to pieces when he drives it. Anyway I'll see if he can shed some light on this topic.

I just put on the Nismo CAI here recently and I have the navigation option where it charts out the MPG, and I am getting noticable changes too. +1-3 mpg on avg. I had the K&N drop filter before with the stopck box. I usualy have an avg. ~19-20 and on the past few fillups I had an avg of 21-22. Could be the weather here in GA is getting colder, but none the less this CAI sounds kick a** when you punch it around 3500 rpm. Power gains were not noticable until 4500 RPM and little at high.
