Default How Hot Do Exhaust Tips Get?

Basically, I bought an x02 exhaust today thinking that tip just had dirt on it. Come to think, it was rust on the tips. When I tried wet sanding with 2000 grit, it took the whole blue coating off. So I'm just going to paint the tips and was wondering how hot it gets. High temp paint has limited color so was wondering if regular paint will hold up to the heat.

You should drive your car how you would normally do and after you stop and turn the car off, touch your exhaust tips to see how hot they get. It's easy to determine if it's low heat or high heat.

the only why you'll find out is if you lick it.

Are you being serious about that?

And to the rest, thank you for the entertaining comments. What is done is done. Be glad it isn't you who was retarded enough to buy it

Yes i'm serious. There is no better way of seeing if your exhaust tips get hot or not.

if i bought the x02, personally i probably would have painted the entire exhaust in high heat paint that stops rust. (most likely flat black)
then i would hope that it works :P

ok, heres a quick and handy way

high temp. paint comes in either +120 deg. cel. or -120 deg. cel.

After u drive around, step out, get a small bottle of water, and pour some on the tips, if the water evaporates instantly, u need the +120 deg. cel. paint...

If it sort of just simmers a bit, or does nothing significant, get the -120 Deg. cel.

I am a noob, but hope this help...

The exhaust gas at the end of the exhaust system can easily reach 800'F.

I wouldn't paint it because your only options are silver exhaust system paint or colored BBQ paint... and none of them would look good on your exhaust tips.

The best thing you can do at this point is simply polish the rest of the tips to a good clean shine.

There isn't much else you can do.

Lol sorry. You must be dumb enough not read my reply to him.

Back on topic. I didn't know it reached up to 800 at the tips. Thought it would be a little less. Anyway, I'm thinking of just wet sanding the rust off and then polishing the best I can.

When they totally crap out, I can just buy tips with the same diameter and drill holes. O well, it's a problem, but at least there is a solution.

Thanks all for the help

I've used my infared thermometor to shoot the inside of the tips, black with carbon so not much reflection and seen temps upwards of 250-300 degrees.

Well tonight, I bought some vht high temp paint (up to 500 degrees). Trying a test pipe and misting it. Doesn't do the same job, but i think it might look good enough. Once everything is done, i'll post pics whether good or bad

hey guys,
Just FYI and those that have the same rusty tip as me. Apparently there is a way to make stainless that bluish tinge. All you need is a blow torch and make the stainless red hot. Let it cool, and it turns blue from the chemical reaction. Here's the link...Gonna try this tomorrow on a test piece first.

yeah its possible. And I even thought of suggesting it, but be careful... It may totally wreck your tips with warpage.

I think today I'm going to try it. I'll first practice on the x02 g35 extension just to get the feel for it. When I do the actual tips, I'll be careful since the tips are such thin metal

Thin metal warps real easy when a torch is involved.
