Exhaust questions
Ok...so I am about to purchase an aftermarket exhaust for my Z. I'm going to go with the RS-R. I want THE best sound and performance...I feel dumb asking this, but what all will I need? I have read about test pipes, y pipes, etc. Are they the same? Should I purchase both? Or is it just a one or the other type deal? I've seen a bunch of posts on what is the best test pipe, what is the best y-pipe...but I can't seem to find anything on the setup and what is needed and recommended. Would test pipes be good, or do I need y-pipes too? Sorry if this is dumb......just want to know for sure before I break out the cash.
I recommend you get under your car and get familiar with the exhaust components before you go and buy parts that you have no idea about.
Here's a chart I compiled just for you:
2 Headers --> 2 catalytic converters** --> y-pipe --> midpipe --> muffler section --> 2 stainless steel tips.
**2 Catalytic converters may be replaced with 2 test pipes at owner's consent.

If you want the best performance, you should take a look at true dual exhausts and single exit exhausts.
Best sound is completely up to you, I could name plenty of exhausts and everybody would just have their own different opinions.
Something to consider:
Switching out exhaust components alone will not get you BEST performance. By installing test pipes and a cat-back exhaust system, you are looking at about 15-17whp. From what I've seen, test pipes alone net you a good 10whp. And they are also the lesser expensive mods, giving you the best bang for the buck.
RSR is not a true dual exhaust system (true dual means to run 2 separate pipes from the cats back). RSR is not a cat-back (meaning that you only get a mid-pipe piece and a muffler section with exhaust tips, NO y-pipe included).
You seem new to this, I advise you to take your time and explore this website. There is a search button that can be very helpful.

I HAVE searched and I am not finding the answers to my questions. You guys always preach "Search", but theres alot of ******** to sort through and it's really hard to figure out exactly what would be best. I take it you think that a true dual exhaust would be a better option than test pipes + y pipes + rs-r exhaust? Are there any dyno numbers to back that up? I don't expect any miracle gains from an exhaust setup...I just want a great sound and the slight advantage in performance. I really like the sound of the rs-r....so I'm more than likely going to go with that. I just want to know what accessories I would need to make this setup the best that it can be. Thanx.
I realize that...I just wanted to know.....with the rs-r exhaust would test pipes and y-pipes be a good setup? Or am I missing something? And would I really be missing out if I didn't have a true dual exhaust?

Hey bro, I will try to help you. I also just received my RSR exhaust and I am so in love with the sound!
Ok...So with the RSR you get the mufflers + Mid Pipe. This produces very good sound as it is. If you want to add to this, you can get a Y-Pipe. This Y pipe goes in between your high flow cats and the mid pipe.
So now you have replaced the Muffler, mid pipe and Y-pipe. Now you have stock cats left. You can replace these stock cats with either High flow cats OR test pipes. Its one or the other. I would recommend high flow cats, but test pipes produce a little more whp. I've read that if you do decide to replace the stock cats with test pipes, you will get the CEL (CHECK ENGINE LIGHT).
Those are the 4 pipes involved. From rear of car to front: Muffler---Midpipe---Y-pipe---High flow cats OR test pipes (one or the other)
The highflow cats/test pipes are connected to headers, so you can replace them next if you want. There is really no need to replace headers if you have the HR engine. (VQ35HR engine is in the 07-08 model)
So in summary, after you install your RSR exhaust, you can further modify your Z with mounting a Y-pipe AND high flow cats OR test pipes.

I think i'll just get the rs-r and y pipe. I'll hold off on switching the cats to test pipes. Thats always something I can do later....anyone have any recommendations for a y pipe?

I prefer a dual exhaust: one with two resonators and two mufflers. There is no “Y” for exhaust gasses to converge. There are no 90-degree bends. Cylinders 1, 3 and 5 and 2, 4 and 6 get there own “side.” Its not “better” than other set-ups just a preference.
