i think your wrong r-tune... what part of the car are you talking about? it your talking around the tranny area, then they indeed would be cats. if your talking about before the rear end, then they are probly resonators (which are not cats), and if your talking about the back, well then its the mufflers my friend.

There are two cats on a stock Z, one off each manifold and before the Y pipe. Test pipes replace those. There are no cats in any off the shelf aftermarket exhaust system, to include the Nismo, made for the Z.
well thanks for clearing that up for me. i would not say that my comments are "stupid" just misinformed. i am only going on what i already know, which has been mostly honda and bmw cars.

so what you are telling me is that both of the circled locations are resonators and neither is a catalytic converter...?

regardless of my apparent stupidity, it is hurting the performance of his engine.

The smaller canister is a resonator. The larger canister is a muffler.

And I would agree with the last sentence of your post.

yurp. well thanks for clearing that up for me, i was under the impression that one of the 2 circled locations were also catalytic converters.

the only way to learn is by trial and error. there will always be someone more informed, and more than willing to input their thoughts into a forum. i hope i am not pissing anyone off though, i am really not trying to spread misinformation .

i think some people that had hfc/tp crack on them w/ the nismo switched out y pipes and it never cracked agian for them. i think "gsazabi" actually switched his nismo y pipe for a jic one, and never had any problems after that

heres my 2 cents and what i did and i dont regret it one bit. screw the nismo y pipe and get a jic y pipe. its super flexible and will not crack your test pipes because the nismo y pipe doesnt flex at all and thats the problem. so spring $500 for the jic and i guarantee youll love it. your car performs so much better and it sounds 50 times cleaner. the y pipe is my favorite mod and its worth every penny.

Assuming you have a 2003, you're smog still wouldn't be due until 2009.
