best exhaust for your money
just have someone make you a true dual stainless steel mandrel bent exaust out of 2 pipes and nothing else....
just run open headers out to the rear...
its gonna be loud as fizznik but you wont have any resistance.... = most gains

I've seen a great deal of posts here referring to open exhausts, no cats, mufflers, etc and the supposed power gains. Has anyone measured these systems on a dyno? What were the results? How did torque suffer?
My experience with modern import engines is that it's possible to actually LOSE power by dropping the back pressure drastically. Especially low end torque as the engine is designed to run with a certain amount of backpressue to aid ignition, etc. I saw this phenomenon on my 98 Maxima when I switched from the factory Y-pipe to a performance model that was minus the pre-cats and much less restrictive. Low end torque suffered, but I had noticable gains in the higher gears in freeway driving.
I'm not an environmentalist, not approaching it from that angle at all. I'm just not sure of the wisdom of applying lessons learned with large displacement OHV V8's to more complex powertrains.
culatr,
I'm in the Austin area and contemplating exhaust options. I'd be very interested to hear about the shop you worked with in town. Please PM me. (Noticed that your PM is disabled currently)

puke on the magnaflow...
as far as back pressure... as long as your not running 4 inch piping... your fine...
putting on a borla exaust with borla headers would be the same as running open headers with a muffler...
not like taht mufler puts on much resistance...
you will just hear some pop's.. but you hear that with any exaust you put on after stock...

Why would I want to bash the "Z". I looked at those when I was buying my G. They are both great cars, cousins really. We should be one family here, and stop the bashing. As you can see I agree on the Magnaflow. No baffles, just straight pipes and packing.

I've seen a lot of it back and forth between G and Z enthusiasts - here to a small degree but more on other boards. Agree, I don't understand it either. Now Subarus on the other hand... just kidding - I'm sure WRX owners are just as proud - just not from a cosmetic perspective...

More than anything, however, I'd have to say I'd like to see an X-pipe solution because they are famous amongst the Cobra scene for making their DOHC4.6 liter sound VERY exotic. I'll post back here if I dig up some sound clips.
