Default question on intake, am I suckin in enough air?

So far, I've added a motordyne thermal iso plenum spacer and a magnaflow 3" exhaust system. I still use the stock air box as I was kind of disappointed with the gains of other systems, don't want to lose low end torque and don't want to have cold air/tough access to cleaning the filter.

Am I sucking in enough air with this thing? Should I at least get a pop charger to get the air box off, is it restrictive?

appreciate the input.. I searched around for quiet a while today at work but could not find info pertaining to my question.

Well first off are what year Z do you have?

06 and up? Well you have a well designed airbox, a K and N drop in filter would be good for you but if you have a 05 or a non revup then a popcharger wouldn't hurt.

Default Air Intake

Either one of the two choices mentioned would not be an upgrade. Both have significant shortcomings. Based on testing, there are better options available. Don't use gauze filters on your Z.

the exhaust isn't helping the intake airflow. it's helping let the exhaust gases that you sucked, out...the stock airbox isn't that restrictive really, in fact it's pretty open as stock intakes go.

I know, I'm not a *full* retard, but I don't claim to know it all either. I figure, the engine is now able to suck in more air with the spacer, but I am still using the stock air box.. and I have a wide open exhaust to accomodate the extra air flow..

I rarely see a car with exhaust, but not intake - but then again, most cars dont have as good of a stock intake system as the Z does.

criminy, I hope you didn't think I was being a know it all. The plenum spacer is gonna even things out. having a 3" exhaust is gonna let out the gases and hopefully not with a *pop*.

i wasn't meaning to be a d!c. Just drunk posting after a political debate. my bad.

So the 06+ airbox truly is the best intake system for the Z? I've heard good things about the Injen long tube CAI but also even better things about the stock airbox(s), can someone clarify this for me and the OP?

Well with the long tube intake those extra bends have been known to cause a bit of torque and hp loss.
They are mostly just for sound.

I ended up snagging a local JWT that was used for two weeks, looked brand new to me, good deal on it. it definitely adds an aggresive tone, and I'm not hearing any whistling like a lot of others have said.. sounds mean, but its hard to tell if it helps when it adds such a minor amount of hp - guess a tune and dyno would sure help.

You should wait for a few bolt ons before a tune, look into a plenum spacer and high flow cats or res. test pipes.

I think I mentioned it in the first post, but i have a catback exhaust system (y pipe included, 3"), motordyne thermaliso plenum spacer and now the pop charger.

I am not really that interested in headers, but high flow cats are a possibility

1. intake gains are very, very difficult to measure when the car is sitting still with the hood up on a dyno. In other words, they are good for marketing, and not much else

2.the stock airbox works well, 06 one is designed a bit better, and there are several good aftermarket units out there as well - all of which are similar to one another. Some need more tuning than others based on various factors

I just dyno'd my car and I dunno if the guy who drove it wasn't flooring it or what but another Z with less mods put down way more with an AEM intake. 16 more. My car with almost all bolt-ons and a reflash laid down near-stock #s. Dyno was not calibrated correctly tho and they didn't put a fan in front of my car. Would that affect my #s drastically when using a stock 06 box w/ drop-in? I'm thinking the other car made decent power b/c he had an open filter and my car had no air coming in without fans.

Dyno without fans=fail.
