How can I tell if I have aftermarket cams installed?
Hi Guys, I have a 2006 Revup Base 350Z. Approx 60k miles. The guy I bought it from told me that he had Nismo cams installed at the dealership at about 10k miles. I question whether or not they are really installed since he overexaggerated on a few other things...like telling me the speakers were W7's when they were actually W3's. So how can I tell if the cams are really installed? Do I need to remove the valve cover and measure the cam lobes? If so, what are stock cam lobe specs, or where can I find the specs online? Thanks all.

Best way to learn!! Remove the upper and lower plenum (Super easy compared to how it sounds) and you can get to everythign REALLY easy!!
Look around the heads and see if any of the RTV that has seeped through the cracks looks newer then the rest of the car.
I'd also ask him which dealership he took it to. If it's really a deale rinstall, they should have record of the work in their computer.
Ok my next question is, I'm 200 miles from taking the car back to the dealership for its final oil measurement (burning oil)...my biggest worry is that, IF, and that's a big unlikely if, this motor has Nismo cams, I'd hate to have given them away to the dealership. But I def wanna make sure if they are or aren't. If they are installed, what would you guys suggest I do?
doesn’t the seller have receipts and the old cams?... if not you probably do not have aftermarket cams.
FWIW, I keep receipts of everything I've done and all old parts (including my OEM cams)... they will all go to eventual new owner.

Coincidently, the previous owner cannot produce recieptsfor the supposed Nismo cams. My bet is that these cams in this motor are stock, but I'll make sure anyway. Idle sounds pretty normal to me...no audible indication at all of anything other thatn stock...unless of course they are top secret Nismo sleeper cams. What is the stock lift on the intake cam? Thanks again guys.

So I wouldn’t use that as your determining factor. However, if he doesn’t have a set of OEM cams lying around and no invoice for after market cams - you probably have OEM (as I mentioned in earlier post).
A couple of things to think about. I believe Nismo makes two set of cams and they are both geared towards topend power with lifts at 11mm which will require you to get new valve springs for them to work correctly. Couple of weeks ago I asked Infiniti to install a set of cams for me but they said they couldn't since they were not CARB legal.
is the rest of the car stock?
if so get it dynoed and see if it matches what nissan sayes the cams put do
dont forget that what they say is the hp increase for the cams is usually at the crank. so take off a few hp off what they say and see if it matches up with your hp
good luck. hopefully ur stock

I guess you can also do a dyno, though it'll be a little harder to tell since you don't have a baseline of your car with that dyno machine. However, you might be able to see if the car pulls pass 6k rpm, stock cars usually don't make additional power pass that. Usually topend cams will but with the sacrifice of low-midend.
Nismo never made cams for Revup motors.
The seller is lying...
If you want to check if you have aftermarket cams you can see if the motor has been taken out before because you need to take the motor out to install cams.
If the rest of the car is stock then 99.99% it doesn't have aftermarket cams because very few (if there are any) of the 350z/G35 owners would just do cams.
