If you have the Carbon residue on your tips with stock cats, time to check up your cats or your car..

If you have aftermarket cats/ testpipe, the Carbon residue is completely normal

Yeah, the paint is burning.

The proper way to do that is to polish it down if you want it to look like a Nismo exhaust. I had an OEM exhaust as a polishing project, but it just isn't of the quality where the polish came out good. There's a lot of little divots in the metal plus the welds were a little uneven- looked better with the underside painted black.

If I were you, I'd find an OEM exhaust muffler in your area and just swap it out- you may be able to find one for free from a member. If you don't do that, you can always just take the muffler off, strip the paint off, then spray it with some high-temp flat black and be done with it.
