Default Can I leave the cats unbolted from the bracket?

I have an 07 with the HR and was wondering if it is ok to leave the cats unbolted from the brackets. I had my passenger side cat basicly fall apart inside the cat and it also cracked all the way around the weld resulting in it coming apart. I was laid off so I didnt have enough money to swap the stocks back in, they welded it back together and hollowed out the cat. It held up for a couple of months and it just cracked again so I just took it back to the same place. I went outside to check it out on the lift and it cracked in another spot, below the bottom weld... the steel tube has a nice big crack in it and so did the other cat on the drivers side...

I'm fighting a losing battle but I still don't have money to buy new ones or swap the stock ones on. I've heard the Nismo Y pipe is to blame... but it seems like the flex joints aren't too useful if the cats are bolted to those brackets anyway. The guy said he would unbolt them and if it became a problem he would bolt them back. Will this be ok? He thinks the engine torque is stressing the cats, but I want to make sure, I'm gonna pick it up tomorrow. Thanks

btw, I bought them used and were fine when I got them and I don't have any local berk dealers so I couldn't get them exchanged.

If you have the stock cats, can't you borrow some ramps or jack stands and change them out yourself? I know it would be a pain in the backside to do, but then you wouldn't have to chase the problem.

i cut my brackets off my crawfords and one of them snapped in half... before that, they cracked AT the bracket... it was a lose lose battle.... but i learned to change both cats out in under 20 min in the process

to answer your question, they will crack either way, just at diff places

Thank you.. I wish I could but I've heard the HR cats are a nightmare to get to. I had one shop takes hours to try to get one bolt off by the header and they gave up and returned everything back to stock... Thats why I never asked any friends to try to help.

I just did my headers and left the bracket off for the cat and it rattles but that's it.

Well, without a doubt worst mod I've ever done to the car. I went to pick it up and now I owe the guy 170 because he decided to try to salvage them and spent 2 hours filling in cracks in both pipes. He said theyre garbage, and he couldnt get in touch because my cell is off. I told him I didnt give him the stock cats to put back on because I didnt have money to do it, but he said he will do it anyway to avoid this again. He's a cool guy, he knows im unemployed so he's putting me down for the amount I owe and said I could pay him later.. These pos are going to end up costing me over 700 dollars in the end... Maybe 1k..

I'll put pics up when I get them. I still have to now drop the stocks off somehow with no car. Then rack up another 100.. Un****ingbelievable. Never again.

.... look on the DIY page... removing the stock cats and putting aftermarket ones on is a walk in the park compared to a TT install lol. A little determination, some long extensions and your favorite beverage will have you fixed up in no time!!!
