Question To CAI or not to CAI???

I've been trolling through the different threads on AEM, Nismo and Injen CAI's.

With all the talk of catch cans, MAF problems, water problems, no gains...I'm wondering why would one install and aftermarket CAI?

I have my Injen CAI w/blue powder coated tubes sitting in a box in my garage but now I don't know if I should even put the thing on.

I'd like to hear from those who have installed an Injen CAI why you're happy with it and why you're not...

Based on the responses my Injen CAI may end up on eBay...

Agreed too much risk with no performance to gain. Not to mention you will lose the ability to pressurize air at speed.

CAI is a great mod that does have dyno proven gains around 5-7 HP. Also makes the car sound meaner in my opinion.

Have had my Injen CAI installed for 2,000 miles now with no issues at all. Improve power in upper RPMs, sounds great, looks great.

i cannot see how 5 hp in a 287 hp car makes any difference at all....a reputable aftermarket supplier in my city suggested that this was a total waste of time and money!

Its not if you plan on going with a better flowing exhaust/headers,cats combo in my opinion. Just depneds on if it can complient another mod.

I love my INJEN CAI and the gains I have gotten from it. Helps your Z breath better and does have a mean sound to it.

Well dont expect much more than 5hp with any NA mod for our Z. Exhuast is in the 8-11hp range. This 6 is already breathing very well and is very potent at 287HP NA. Ive heard of CAI losing HP and the fact that it does not pressurize air at speed(something u cannot measure on the dyno) is a concern for me as well. Go with a regular K&N drop in. Joe Verdone who has countless awards from SEMA told me that K&N is by far the best way to go on the Z. UNLESS you are getting FI then a CAI is more worth while. I trust him!

I used to be all for k&n filters, they definitley flow betterthan most
the problem is they dont "filter" out as much of the particulate
debris, which can do damage way later.

One other thing Ive heard is that people run into problems when re-oiling them. Its better to just buy a new one than re-oil.

I reoiled the filter on my GSX it was an oval cone type. Wasn't hard at all. Just washit out and it turns white. Then apply the bright red oil to the white filter untill it is very red and wallah. Done! Although I will probably be buying a new drop in every 50k miles, hehe.

this is the kinda "entry level mod"....if you have more than 3 performance mods chances are this is one of them...its more for asthetic purposes in the long run...im installing mine along with the SES exhaust (angled) next week.....hopefully i could get it dynoed.....

A quick not on CAI's. Don't knock it before you have tried it!
