What kinda y-pipe with cats?
huh? are you asking what aftermarket y pipes you can purchase to use in conjunction with your existing catalytic converters? or are asking if aftermarket Y pipes come with cats attached to them?.. they do not, but I really have no idea what you are trying to ask.
exhaust system - headers -> two catalytic converters -> y pipe -> mid pipe with resonator -> muffler

do y pipes come with catalytic converters or do they attach to them?first time modifying a import or 350z..use to own a few mustangs and on them the x pipe or h pipe was the only thing between the headers and the catback and they either had the cats attached to them or they didnt..sorry about the question or how i wrote it down
it's okay. catalytic converters are separate pieces of equipment on our car - they connect from the headers, to the the two parts of the Y pipe.
when you are in the market for a new Y pipe you just slap it in place of the old Y pipe, your cats remain intact.
you can purchase high flow cats or test pipes (empty pipes that completely replace the two cat converters) if you want additional power.

down pipes are for turbo setups. you don't need to worry about it, your car doesn't have one.
03-06 Y pipes are a little restrictive, I would say replacing it with an 07-08 HR or a better aftermarket one provide some pretty respectful gains. if you are not going to be purchasing an entire catback system (y pipe or X/H pipe, mid pipe(s), muffler(s)), and are only interested in a Y pipe, I recommend the Motordyne XYZ pipe.

if you have a full nismo catback then you already have a nismo y pipe. that set up is pretty mild for gains, but gains from exhaust aren't massive to begin with.
what year is your Z? the best bang for the buck for you at this point is more then likely a plenum spacer. I would forget about high flowing cats or test pipes with the nismo Y pipe - it is prone to cracking them, lots of reported issues with that happening.

time to study up about your car.
the plenum is the piece that is connected to your air intake tube. it's a part of the intake system. there are spacers for it that increases the volume of air it takes in and spreads it more evenly - creating more power.
