I have the Nismo Headers and Borla True Dual. I really want to add the RT cats but am worried about all the raspiness everyone is talking about with the test pipes. I don't think I'll get the raspiness with the RT cats just evaluating what everyone has said about them but if you can just give me your opinion on what the sound will do, power too...?? And I am young and don't mind it being loud, its part of what I'm looking for. Thanks for any help.

I'm looking forward to getting the RT Cats here soon from you guys over at Performance Nissan. Just got my NISMO exhaust. I can't wait to get them installed!

 

THere is NO raspiness with the RT's. The raspy ness is from straight test pipes which dont perform as well as the RT's we are finding out. The see needs a slight amount of back pressure and with your borla true dual, you would have none with straight pipes.

It will sound full, but not raspy..

 

Well, you will definatly notice a difference!

My car goes to the dyno tommorow so I will post the gains from NISMO EXHAUST only to RT CATS and NISMO...

 

I heard that the RT Cats cause the Nismo exhaust to hang lower due to the length/shape of the bend. Do they and does it cause the peip to bottom out ?

 

I have some big speed bumps in my apartment development, I have scraped them with my set up without the nismo exhaust. Odd though because I haven't scraped since the install of the cats. The cats do not have as much AROUND the piping. It is a straight pipe that is parallel to the ground and nothing around it. So maybe you gain some height by the actual RT Cat. It can how ever with Headers and after-market exhaust cause the exhaust to sit just slightly low enough to vibrate on the rear cross member (pictured below). That problem is easily fixed with a set of shim's we supply with the cats.

Here are some pix of the rear cross member.


In the above photo you see a large metal screw driver pointing to the bolts that need to be loosened to insert the shims. Just loosen them enough to get the shims around them and then tighten. Pictured is the stock exhaust. If you notice there is a metal surrounding of the y-pipe. that is also on the cats, but there is non of that on the RT cats.


Another angle. You can see how the single pipe of the stock exhaust is about a centimeter above the rear cross member. The shims push down that flat wide metal piece going across.

 

Thanks. I have the Nismo exhaust which hangs a little lower than stock as it is - hence my concern.

I havent scraped where I used to some times scraped with only the nismo exhaust.

I put the shims in any way, I did not really need to it wasnt close to hitting the cross member.

 

Do instructions on installing the shims come with the RT Cats? I'd hate for the installer to think he had extra parts.

 

No its something that was figured out from various installs from various people.

Basically. Tell him that the 2 shims (look like 2 pronged forks) that are in each bag are to be placed above the cross member. Simply loosen the bolts until the shims will fit around the bolts and then tighten.

Can print the photos too if they will help.

 

Yeah you guys should make a quick sheet with the photos and an explanation. Providing the shims is really great of you guys.

 

Ya know, I thought about that after posting the photos above.

Next time my car or any Z is on the lift Ill take some better pictures.

Car goes to Dyno Tommorow, Then Wednesday with new intake.

 

Here is a pic of the shims. I just got them from Jason today and had them installed at a local performance shop.
This took care of the vibration I was having by the exhaust pipe touching the cross member. Once again Jason thanks.

Just for clarification, this is not the rear cross member your are putting these spacers in, but just a light weight brace that helps to lessen body flex. I will make sure Jason gets the time today to get some pictures and we will include them with our kits. Also pimp1911, thanks for the picture, but next time make sure you get the whole envelope shot..... You can't completely see our name and address....

I've studied the dyno charts on this board quite a bit and based on some of my conclusions, I'm afraid that running highflow cats + exhaust will make me run lean. In fact, I haven't heard of a anyone break 260 on a Z without experiencing a lean condition.

Dunno, still may be worth a try ... but $500+tax is kinda tough for me to come by right now (trying to save up for a new house)

I dunno, I may get in a mood and go pick them up one of these weekends before an upcoming group dyno day.
